INTRODUCTION:

SKK Mobile Industry Trading, Inc. has been in the industry since 2008, they started with mobile accessories specifically chargers and batteries. Their first attempt to join the mobile phone competitions are by releasing dual SIM phones with designs that are similar with Nokia, Samsung etc. Then later on they venture to smart phones with an Android platform.

Recently, they announced the SKK Mobile Silver, although there was not much hype like other brands were doing when releasing their flagship phones. Nonetheless, it still caught my attention and curiosity grows that I decided to buy it for a review.

The SKK Mobile Silver is a dual SIM, dual standby phone, it is powered by a MediaTek MT6589 chipset with a power efficient Quad-Core Cortex A7 CPU, PowerVR SGX544 and coupled with 1GB of RAM. Let us take a look on a detailed review and decide for yourself if it can emerge victorious over competitors offering.

Key Specs:

  • Dual SIM , Dual Standby
  • Tri-Band GSM/EDGE/GPRS (both SIMs) and  Dual Band HSPA+ (BOTH SIM)
  • 5.7" capacitive IPS High Definition LCD (1280 x 720)
  • Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1
  • 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 Quad Core CPU, PowerVR SGX544MP GPU MediaTek MT6589 chipset
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB internal (6.53 GB available), expandable up to 32GB via micro SD
  • 13.0MP auto focus main camera with LED Flash, geo-tagging, HDR, Burst Shot (up to 99 shots), panorama, photo-sphere
  • 5.0MP secondary camera
  • Video Recording up to 1080p (Rear Camera), VGA for front camera
  • GPS with A-GPS and EPO assistance
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi Direct
  • 3.5 Audio Jack
  • Stereo FM Radio
  • MP3/MP4 Player
  • Micro USB 2.0, USB OTG support
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Light, Proximity, Sound
  • Great Audio Output

Main Disadvantages:
  • No dedicated shutter key
  • No TV output nor any option for wireless mirroring
  • Samsung Galaxy Note II knockoff

As you can see in the specification, it is something we already saw on the other local brand flagship, and I believed that we will continue to see similar specs within this year. One interesting thing I noticed is that the specification on the box is different than what will you see on the "INFO" links on the static benchmark test.

UNBOXING:

SKK Mobile paid good attention to their flagship, the retail package includes the unit itself, USB cable/charger combo, wired headset, warranty card & and manual. The "freebies" include a flip case and a screen protector (clear type which is already installed in the unit).

Unit and Accessories

The SILVER is offered in two colors, white and titanium gray, which is exactly the same colors when the Samsung Galaxy Note II was released. In fact, the SKK Mobile Silver does look like the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Based on the pictures above, we can safely say that it is a Samsung Galaxy Note II "knockoff". Even the placement of the power and volume keys are the same with the original Note II. In fact, you will have a hard time telling which is which at a distance especially that they are almost of the same size. However, SKK Mobile Silver has a solid build quality, the back is NOT a finger print magnet and overall it does look elegant.

Front

The front is mainly covered by the 5.7" IPS high definition LCD, just above the display you will find an earpiece located at the center. On the left side of the earpiece you will find the 5MP camera for video calling as well as self-portrait imaging & VGA video recording. At the right side light sensor and the proximity sensor (there is no LED notification).

At the bottom of the display you will find the home located at the center. Please take note that the home key is a hardware key (similar to Note II), therefore I suggest that you download a "home button" app in the Play Store to make sure that it will not wear out quickly. The menu and back keys are capacitive soft keys located on left and right side of the home key respectively.

There is only the 3.5mm audio jack at the top of the device.

At the bottom of the SKK Silver, we will find the micro USB port that doubles as charging port and has OTG support. The mouthpiece is also located here.

On the left side we will find the volume rocker, the power key is located symmetrically on the right side. Although there is ample space on both sides, the manufacturer did not bother to put a dedicated shutter key.

The cover is completely plastic, which feels nice to touch and not a fingerprint magnet. The back houses the main 13MP camera which is accompanied by an LED flash beside it. Just below the camera you will find the SKK Mobile logo while the loud speaker grill is located at the lower left.

Removing the back cover is not that easy, once removed, it reveals the battery rated at 2400mAh, the slots for the two SIM cards as well as the slot for the micro SD card for memory expansion.

INTERFACE:

SKK Mobile Silver Duo utilizes a stock Android interface with a very minimal tweak. It is running on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean (as opposed to the specification in its box). The interface is quite fast with refresh rate of 56 fps. Upon turning on the device you will be amazed by its massive 5.7" screen with 1280x720 resolution with 320 DPI. Even though there is a pre-installed screen protector the display is still pretty decent with wide viewing angle.

The lockscreen is the usual Jelly Bean stuff, where in you can drag and in any direction to unlock the screen. If you have a notification like a message, it will appear somewhere above and you can drag it towards the icon so that you can easily view it without going to the homescreen.

During a lockscreen you can swipe the screen towards the right for the camera shortcut, swiping it left will reveal a vacant shortcut which you can customize with calendar, clock, Gmail and message.

The lockscreen

Passed the lockscreen you will be greeted by the homescreen which is consist of five panes. You cannot add any additional pane neither delete them. The picture below is the default homescreen, with five shortcut key below. The middle always opens the app drawer and the remaining 4 can be customized based on your needs. You can always add your favorite app or widget to the homescreen by tapping and holding it.

Clicking the app drawer will reveal the factory installed application and widgets. The Play Store shortcut is always present at the upper right hand corner.

The notification panel in Android 4.2.1 is a bit different compared to its old iteration. The notification panel can be accessed by swiping from the top of the screen going down. The usual shortcuts are hidden and can be accessed after click an icon at the upper rightmost corner. Once you click it, the available shortcuts will be revealed such as Owner, Airplane mode, Battery, Wi-Fi, BT, GPS, Data Connection, Data Usage, Audio Profile, Brightness, Timeout and Auto Rotation.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Notification

If you have any notification you can directly access it on a notification panel which gives you several options to choose from. For example, a missed call will provide you the option to call back or to send a message. If you have several applications running you can use the task switcher by pressing and holding the home button, it this manner you can easily go back and forth on your open apps.

If you are in an application which involves the use of the SIM card (e.g. Telephony, Messaging) there will be an additional option in the notification panel wherein you can opt to choose your default SIM.

BENCHMARKS:

The SKK Mobile Duo relies on a powerful 1.2GHZ quad core MediaTek MT6589 processor, PowerVR SGX544MP GPU and 1GB RAM. This is basically the same chipset with other local quad core brands, and as expected it has an impressive score in well known static benchmarks.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Antutu, 12774

The Antutu score is typical for the MT6589 chipset, on the System info you will notice that camera resolutions are 12.6MP (13 when rounded off) and 4.9MP for the main and front camera respectively. This is contradicting on the specification listed on the box where it says 12MP + 2MP for the camera. The iteration of Jelly Bean is 4.2.1 which is higher than the 4.1 version on the box.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Quadrant, 4032

The quadrant score of 4032 is higher than the MyPhone A919i score of 3570. I believed that the almost 500 difference can be attributed on the O/S version used on respective phones.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Nenamark, 45.7fps.

The Nenamark2 benchmark result is also impressive topping off at 45.7 fps.
SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Vellamo, HTML5 1409 and Metal 442

The Vellamo test results are great, it almost catches up with the Samsung Galaxy SIII.

DUAL SIM FUNCTIONALITY:

Under settings-wireless & networks you will find the SIM management. You can switch each SIM on or off to help you save battery (especially if you are only using one SIM). Other SIM management settings are as follows:

  1. Voice Call - you can choose SIM 1, SIM 2 or Always ask
  2. Video Call - you can choose SIM1 or SIM 2
  3. Messaging - you can choose SIM 1, SIM 2 or Always ask
  4. Data Connection - you can choose SIM 1, SIM 2 or off

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
SIM Management

Both SIM slots are HSPA+ capable, you need to configure under Wireless & Networks - Mobile Networks which SIM car you want to have a HSPA+ support. This is quite handy, especially when you are using two SIM cards with different networks, if one network cannot access HSPA+ you can switch to the other.

Every time you change your SIM card  it saves your preference and naming scheme (it will not allow the same SIM card name if  they are different SIM cards).

TELEPHONY:

Selecting the telephony icon on the homescreen will bring the dial pad which has smart dialing is also present which searches both names and numbers. The second tab will list your call history while the third tab will list your frequently contacted persons.

The call reception is quite good, the sound at the earpiece is clear and loud. The SKK Mobile Silver is also packed with a secondary microphone that makes the crystal call clarity possible.  The option during a call are loud speaker, mute, hold, add a person on the current call and record the call. The proximity sensor turn off the screen automatically during a call which prevents any accidental touch on the screen.

Telephony

 PHONEBOOK:

It uses a tab interface for groups, contacts and frequently contacted. If you are having trouble finding your contacts you can always utilize the search button at the bottom. Under frequently contacted tab, any contact you "starred" will appear at the top.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Phonebook

It has virtually unlimited capacity with all the functionality you need. You can opt to choose which address book you want to display - SIM card, Phone or Online addresses. Adding a new contact or new group will prompt you to which account you want it to be saved. You can also import or export contacts. Each contact can contain multiple information such as emails, numbers, address etc. You can also join contacts from multiple accounts.

MESSAGING:

The messaging application is quite simple, the new button is found at the bottom left while the search button is at the bottom right. The threads are listed based on the latest message created/received. The message thread is color coded, the background of your message is blue while on the recipient is grey. Your message goes on the right side while the recipient message on the left side. Under messaging app, SIM toggle is also available similar to the telephony.

Under a certain conversation, you can find two shortcuts at the upper right hand. The first option will prompt you to save a number if it is not in your contact list. If the person is already on your phone book, it pop-up the said contact. The second option (handset symbol) will prompt you to call the said person/number on that message.

MMS share the same editor as the SMS, under new message clicking the green + symbol will give you the option to add almost anything, once added to a message it automatically converts it to MMS.

Messaging

The default keyboard is only the QWERTY type, you cannot change it to phone pad or other method. It supports auto-capitalization, haptic feedback (vibration on key press) and sound on key press. It also offers an auto correction. Due to the screen size, it is much more comfortable to type using both your hands.

SKK Mobile Silver also works without any issue with popular online messaging applications like Skype, Viber and WeChat.

EMAIL:

For the email department, it consists of the stock email app as well as gmail app. The stock email app handles virtually every internet email. Adding an email account is quite easy you just need your email address and password then hit next and it will automatically look for the correct email settings. You can attach any file you want and can include CC/BCC. You can also change the frequency of sync, include signature, always BCC yourself and change the notification sound. Vibration for incoming email can also be set.

E-mail

The Gmail can automatically sync the Google account you use during Play Store set-up. The Gmail app is basically the same as the email app, however it limits your attachment to only picture or video. The workaround you can do is to go to the file you want to attach, press and hold the file and you will have the option to share it on Gmail. While reading a message, you have the option to report it as spam or phishing as well as mark it not important.

Both email apps can handle multiple email accounts.

MULTIMEDIA:

Gallery:

The SKK Mobile Silver uses the stock Android gallery, you can arrange it based on Albums, Locations, or Times. The camera shortcut is always present at the upper right hand. The gallery also houses both pictures and videos.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Gallery

The SKK Mobile Silver has a built-in photo editing tools which you can access either on gallery or camera application.

Video Player:

Like the gallery, it uses the stock Android video player, it will list all the supported video in your device (both on the internal storage and external SD card). It can only play almost any file I throw at it .3gp, .avi, .mp4 even .mkv and .flv. Impressively, it can handle 1080p video without any lag or stuttering. You can play the video as normal, stretch or full screen. There is also an option to share the video thru facebook, email etc. The only let down of the video player is that it does NOT support subtitle.

Videos with different container

Watching a movie on its vibrant 5.7" screen is a pleasure and very comfortable. Still, TV out or any means of mirroring is not present. If in case you prefer a different video player (especially if you like watching videos with subtitle), Mobo player comes pre-installed.

Music Player:

The music player has a tab interface, it will list the music based on four (4) categories namely Artist, Albums, Songs & Playlist. It has the option to search, party shuffle, shuffle all or sound effects. Selecting sound effects will bring you to the equalizer settings. The equalizer has several presets like Normal, Classic, Flat, Rock etc, you can also turn it off if you prefer.

Music Player

The music interface is quite simple, it provides the option to shuffle, repeat current song, repeat all songs and even use it as a ringtone. It also displays album art if available in your files. Once the music player is running, you can easily access it through the notification panel.

Music Interface

FM Radio:

Basically you need a headset for the FM to work. Many people will say that FM radio is a thing of the past, but still its inclusion is a bonus. The FM radio interface is pretty neat and straightforward. It can search all the available channel (or you can add them manually), you can also record your favorite music and play it on speaker.

 Camera/Video:

The camera and video share the same interface. The main camera can shoot from QVGA and maxes out at 13MP and accompanied by a single LED flash. The front camera can shoot from QVGA up to 5MP. There is no dedicated hardware shutter key and you cannot even you the volume key to take a shot or zoom on your subject. Zooming is done by pinching out the screen.

It provides plenty of options such as Exposure, White Balance, Color Effect, Scene Mode & others which you can tweak manually. It can also store your GPS location. Self timer is also available and ISO can be adjusted manually. There is a continuous shot option which is pretty usable and can be either 40 or 99 shots (or you can use less just by releasing the shutter key). The Panorama and Photo-Sphere are also available as well as smile detection.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Camera Options

SKK Mobile Silver has one of the richest options and camera features. I can say that you can actually leave your point and shoot camera behind.  One thing missing is the dual-shot feature which is available on competitor phones. I know I ask too much, however I do hope that someday they can include simultaneous video and still capture.

SKK Mobile Silver Review: Extra Large Quad Core
Camera and Video Settings

The video option is similar to the camera. The main camera can shoot up to full HD 1920x1088 (fine quality) while the front camera can shoot only up to VGA 640x480 resolution. There is also an option where in you can choose either MP4 or 3GP for the files of your  recording.

The picture quality is great especially in broad daylight. Honestly in my naked eye, I do not see much difference with 13MP and 8MP shot (I am looking for a photo comparison tool and once I have it will compare the pictures and update this post). I included MyPhone A919i and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 photos for comparison. Please take note that pictures are taken with a default setting of each handset.

The above picture is cropped from 13MP and 8MP respectively, as you can see there is a size difference due different pixel count but it is still hard to spot the difference.

Browsing:

The MyPhone A919i uses the stock Android browser. The browser itself is quite fast, it loads the web pages even those with many images pretty quickly, however there are times wherein you can see the "reflow" when zooming on a web page. Thanks to its high definition screen you can easily read text on a web page even without zooming. It supports up to sixteen (16) tabs. You can save a web page for offline reading or even share it to someone.

Gaming:

It can handle the most popular games in the Play Store like Temple Run 2 and Candy Crush. I played extensive graphics games like Dead Trigger and NBA Jam, both works like a charm, pretty smooth without any noticeable lag. One thing I noticed is that the games usually load a  little bit longer than branded phones. Once the game was loaded it runs pretty snappy. Thanks to the built in 8GB storage you can easily install games with large data files like NFS or Asphalt 7.

If the on-board storage is still not enough you can easily purchase a 32GB micro SB card for expansion and you can easily transfer all your game into it without even the need for root access.

CONNECTIVITY:

The SKK Mobile Silver supports Triple Band GSM/EDGE/GPRS which can be use for roaming. It also supports dual band HSPA+ on both SIM slots up to 21MBps. It supports tethering and hotspot.

Wi-Fi Connection is good, it can get a good signal even I am upstairs (even my neighbor hotspot, blue color) and also supports Wi-Fi direct.

WiFi

In addition it also has Bluetooth 4.0 and Micro USB 2.0 that support OTG.

The 3.5mm audio jack completes the list, I used the supplied headset, pioneer headset (without microphone) and stock SGN2 headset (with microphone) and all of them works fine.

SENSORS:

The SKK Mobile Silver is equipped with basic of sensors which you can verify if working by downloading Android Sensor Box via Play Store.

PRODUCTIVITY:

The SKK Mobile is pretty well suited for both business and pleasure. There is the default calendar, you can view by day, week, month and agenda. You can choose which account you want to appear in your calendar.

The clock offers several functions like alarm, stopwatch and countdown timer. You can also display multiple time from different cities.

There is also a File Manager and Documents To Go pre-installed.

GPS

It also boasts a capable GPS with A-GPS support as well GPS EPO assistance. Using the inbuilt Google Map, I manage to get a satellite lock at around 1 minute, which is quite good (A-GPS and GPS EPO are on). The satellite tracking is also pretty accurate.

BATTERY:

The SKK Mobile is equipped with 2400mAh battery, and I am very satisfied with its performance. I managed to last for almost 23 hours with WiFi connection almost on, normal call and text, few games played and auto sync in the background for my emails and social accounts.

OTHERS:

There is a pre-installed calibration located under the display setting which checks the G-Sensor and ALS_PS of the device.

SKK Mobile Silver has a Movie Studio pre-installed which is basically a video editor. You can edit an existing video and create your own one using photos or video clips or both.

CONCLUSION: EXTRA LARGE QUAD CORE

The SKK Mobile Silver is not just Extra Large in terms of size and screen, it is also Extra Large in terms of functionality and multimedia capability.  Its feature is comparable to high end phones not only of the local brands but as well as foreign one. The screen size does not suffer for any compromises and very well suited for playing and watching pleasure. Thanks to the screen estate, task or work can be done easily especially when reading emails or editing documents.
The SKK Mobile Silver has rich features and extra large capabilities that would appeal to those people seeking for all-in-one gadget.

    1. I do not know what you meant about "comedy" but if you read it carefully you will notice that I stressed out that the specifications are contradicting in the box and in the benchmark info section. I used the specification found on benchmarks because its more reliable.

"One interesting thing I noticed is that the specification on the box is different than what will you see on the "INFO" links on the static benchmark test."

"The Antutu score is typical for the MT6589 chipset, on the System info you will notice that camera resolutions are 12.6MP (13 when rounded off) and 4.9MP for the main and front camera respectively. This is contradicting on the specification listed on the box where it says 12MP + 2MP for the camera. The iteration of Jelly Bean is 4.2.1 which is higher than the 4.1 version on the box."

I already answered a similar question about the fps for video recording above.

"For 1080p it is 30 fps, while 720p is at 25 fps."

Thanks for the suggestion, I will include video samples on my next reviews.

  18. I only thing I didnt like is that pag inon mo yung phone you showed the pic of SKK's animation logo. ang corny tignan ng device hehehe. also can you compare which is better? note2 or this? and in which aspecs. thanks in advance po!

  19. I like the review. Can you at least let us know the weight and thickness of this device compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 2? I want to know if this is HEAVY. I hope it has the same weight as the Note 2. And for thickness, based on the picture, it seems thicker? Can you confirm that please?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't have the tools/equipment to check the weight/dimensions. The manual doesn't provide information as well, however I can safely say that it is at least 1mm thicker than the note II and a little heavier. Still, it is quite comfortable to hold and won't strain your hands.

  21. please post a youtube review... specially on the speaker volumes... music, movie, radio & handsfree mode. how long does battery last when connected over 3G? what happens if sim1 is in call then another calls sim2? and also vice versa? kindly demo. thanks.

    1. Hi Kenneth,

Kumusta naman battery life niya? Ano average and what applications used?

      Delete
    2. IF I would rate it from 1 to 5 it would be 4 sa battery life nya. kung heavy user ka and love to play games it will last to about 10 hours pero kung average use lang aabot xa ng 1 day.

The Silver and the S4 have been paired and connected already but they cannot seem to transfer files with each other. Any explanation regarding this?

  48. sir, i am using 2 sim cards- the globe and sun, and im using the sun for mobile internet. since a week ago, i used my sun for mobile internet and then its usually disconnected. may i know the reason? is it with the phone or with the sim itself? thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is a dual SIM device so you need to troubleshoot a little to determine the root cause. Let say SIM1 is Sun while SIM2 is Globe, change your data connection to Globe if the problem is resolved it could be the Sun SIM or the SIM1 slot.

  49. Hi there! I finally got my SKK Mobile Silver Phablet yesterday at SM North Cyberzone, after almost 2 months of deciding which to buy between this one, CM Blaze 2.0, and the recently launched Starmobile V7. I am happy to say that I am amazed and I don't have any regrets so far that I bought this phone.

First, the SKK personnel were so accomodating and they really helped me out. I first tried the demo unit on display and boy I was really enjoying every spec of it! It literally is the phone I'm looking for-- large HD screen and powerhouse media specs since i'm a music and movie enthusiast, and the basics of telephony and messaging.. plus the Android 4.2 Jellybean experience is comparable to high-end but expensive phones out there.

I am so fortunate that the unit I bought was the last brand new stock they had so I'm confident that its a hit and not a miss. But since its the last stock they had, the battery was drained already. To my surprise, the SKK assistant helping me (her name is Fe) right away asked her co-personnel to get a new battery from their stock room. And it was not so long for the wait. They really have initiative and they will not keep you waiting.

Like what I read in a blog, Ms. Fe told me that the unit I bought should be observed for a week and I can report any issues to them after that period so the unit can be replaced with a better one. Red flag for some since they may think its a beta test, but that's not a big deal for me because it just shows they really want to give the best value out of your money. Hey, P9999 is P9999!

Ms.Fe was also very helpful when I asked my screen protector to be re-aligned because there were some air bubbles which were not so pretty to look at. That's what you call patience and customer service! One point I would also like to say here is that their kiosk is very cool in the eye for me (the blue lights around and the very clean ambience) not to forget the smiling people who are really willing to help.

Now for my quick look at the phone itself, I am really impressed at all it has to offer. I am kinda bothered by the lockscreen (with the big SKK logo) but I will just replace everything once I get the GoLauncher app. Aesthetic wise, it looks so premium and sosyal. It may look like a Galaxy Note 2 knock-off, but I don't care! Besides, specs-wise saying, I am all about the money here and I am just willing to spend the right amount for a good investment. And to buy an expensive branded phone when there are budget-friendly alternatives with specs comparable to the branded ones, its a very wise and convenient buy.

The Android Jellybean experience is awesome. Moving to and from screens is a breeze, colors are vibrant and appealing, apps really work well with no lags, and the games I tried so far ran fast and great.

I am yet to discover and maximize all its capabilities but for my initial experience with the phone, and not to forget the great customer service of the SKK personnel, I am very satisfied.
