|Symantec Internet Security Threat Report 2014|
Symantec Philippines invited us for a round table discussion a few days ago wherein they gave us updates and insights to last year's landscape of internet security and threats.
The year 2013 is not safe as most ordinary people think of, in fact, the cyberspace is full of crimes and threats, mostly in the form of ransomware, cyber espionage and data breaches. The Philippines is in the number 32 spot in the global list in terms of volume of known cases.

For the benefit of those who are less familiar with ransomware, it is a type of malicious software used by hackers to attack your computers, smartphones or other gadgets, and block your access to that particular system until you pay them the desired money they want. In simple terms, they will "kidnap" your system and ask a ransom then release it when paid. This quite dangerous, especially in a company where there are hundreds or thousands of employees as one infected computer might affect the entire operation.

In this day and age where we rely more on the internet, threats and risks are becoming more and more significant. And, we are not just talking about computers and similar devices, other WiFi-enabled gadgets like smart watches and connected appliances like internet-enabled TVs or even WiFi-ready refrigerators can also be at risk.
To avoid this dilemma, Symantec gave us some tips to prevent it from happening, one of which is to have at least a strong and unique passwords for each email and websites that requires log-in. In addition, we must also be vigilant in every email we open or website that we visit, if you think it is a scam or poses a threat, better not do it, asks an expert or use online search engines to get more information. For corporations or companies, educating the employees should be the next priority after building a strong security structure. To learn and get more tips, visit www.symantec.com
