Ericsson, Smart, and REFUNITE launched the first family tracing and reconnection service in the Philippines and in Asia.

This new service hopes to reunite Filipino families that were separated by Typhoon Haiyan last November 2013. One of the most powerful typhoons in history, Haiyan has displaced around 4 million displaced persons in the Visayas region.

REFUNITE is a mobile and web platform that empowers families to search for missing relatives and it has over 350,000 registered users. Through Ericcson and Smart, the same platform will be available in the Philippines especially to those who were gravely affected and displaced by Haiyan. Moving forward, this partnership will benefit Filipinos in times of disasters and emergencies.

For their part, Smart will make more people aware about the REFUNITE family reconnection through cell broadcasts and SMS campaigns. Meanwhile, facilities for this service will be mounted in Tacloban City and other areas devastated by the typhoon.
