Microsoft has announced that Team Opticode from the Philippines won the second place at the recently concluded Southeast Asia Imagine Cup Finals.

Team Opticode’s solution wanted to improve the quality of life of the visually impaired with Minerva. To identify objects in the real world, Minerva is a virtual assistant mobile application that taps on the power of the smartphone camera.

Users simply have to point the camera at objects, and the assistant will describe it aloud through the phone’s speaker.

Meanwhile, Team CIMOL from Indonesia has won the said regional finals, beating nine other teams to the top prize. Built on Microsoft’s machine learning capabilities, Team CIMOL’s Hoax Analyzer is a web-based app that aims to fight the proliferation of fake news. It is capable of identifying whether the certain contextual information is a hoax or not.

The first place was awarded to the Singapore team, as they invented the S3, a smart wearable device that combines the function of a stethoscope and an electrocardiograph machine. It monitors the user’s heartbeat, and flags any abnormality wirelessly to a doctor so that patients can receive further treatment without delay.

All three teams, however, will be taking their innovation journey at the Imagine Cup World Finals in Seattle, USA this July. The World Finals will gather more than 50 teams from all over the world to compete for the top prize of USD 100,000, mentorship opportunities with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Azure grants and credits to bring their winning solution to the market.

Four other teams were also selected to compete in the World Finals in recognition of their efforts to push the boundaries of human invention. They are Team Parastica of Bangladesh; Team Echo Innovators of Nepal; Team Titans of Sri Lanka; and Team Welse of Thailand.
