Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 660 and 630 SoCs

Qualcomm has officially announced the two newest additions to its lineup of mobile processors, which include the Snapdragon 660 and 630 chipsets.

The Snapdragon 660 is the successor to the Snapdragon 653 chipset. From a 28nm process, the 660 now uses 14nm technology. It now has Kyro 260 cores, as well, which uses a familiar 4+4 octa-core management that features four larger cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four little cores clocked at 1.8GHz. Having a Kyro CPU is a first for the 600 series.

Meanwhile, for the GPU, it will come with an Adreno 512 that is claimed to work 30 percent faster than the one used on the Snapdragon 653. It will also feature the latest Snapdragon X12 LTE modem, Hexagon 642 with HVX and All-Ways Aware technology, Spectra 160 ISP, Bluetooth v5.0, USB Type-C with 3.1-speed compatibility, and QuickCharge 4.0 compliance.

The Snapdragon 630, on the other hand, is the successor to the Snapdragon 626 chipset and it offers a couple of improvements over its predecessor. It uses the same 14nm process and octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 configuration as before, but with a slightly higher 2.2GHz clock speed. It also has a 10 percent boost to performance compared to the 626.

On the GPU side, it features a more powerful Adreno 508 GPU than the 506 of the previous chipset. It is claimed to offer a 30 percent performance improvement, as well. It now uses a 2x16 LPDDR4X memory with a maximum clock speed of 1333MHz, too.

Other features include the X12 LTE modem, support for QXGA displays, Hexagon DSP with All-Aware, Spectra 160 ISP, USB Type-C with 3.1 speeds, Bluetooth v5.0, and QuickCharge 4.0 compliance.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 is now available and will be shipping by the end of this quarter, while the Snapdragon 630 is expected to become available by the end of May.
