YouTube Introduces VR180 Format for Creating VR Content

YouTube, in partnership with Google's Daydream team, has introduced a new video format called the VR180, allowing creators to create immersive VR content even easier and viewers to get a whole new angle on videos they care about.

The VR180 offers an 180-degree field of view, and with the help of VR glasses, viewers will be able to watch high-res videos in 3D on both desktop and mobile. Without the glasses, the video will appear like a regular 2D video.

YouTube's latest VR180 video format works with Google's Cardboard, Daydream, and PSVR and supports live streaming for creators and viewers to better interact in real time.

Creators can take advantage of the new VR180 without having to set up any special equipment to film the videos. Creators can film as they normally would with any kind of camera. Still, with that being said, YouTube shared that the Daydream team is "working with several manufacturers to build cameras from the ground up" for VR180.

Soon, we might see cameras from YI, Lenovo, and LG that will make the best use of the video format. In addition, YouTube also opened a VR180 certification program for other manufactures and Z CAM will be one of their first partners.
