PLDT and its wireless arm, Smart Communications officially sealed a partnership with Huawei Technologies Philippines to bring the next generation of mobile networks, or commonly referred as 5G, to the Filipinos soon.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Manuel V. Pangilinan, PLDT and Smart Chairman, President, and CEO, and by Jacky Gao Kexin, CEO of Huawei Philippines. Under the said agreement, all of the involved parties will work hand-in-hand to develop the 5G ecosystem in the country, both strategically and commercially. The plans include the identification of technology needed to deliver the 5G service, setting up of innovation lap, and of course, the creation of the actual network.

“Smart is focused on LTE, as it provides us the best platform to bring high-speed mobile internet throughout the country. LTE facilities, with strengthened transport links, can be quickly upgraded to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), and will be an integral part of our future 5G network,” said Joachim Horn, chief technology and information advisor for PLDT and Smart.

Late last year, Smart also seeks the expertise of Huawei to combine frequencies of LTE-A, also known as Carrier Aggregation, to achieve ultra fast data speeds, which the major urban areas are now enjoying with speeds that peak more than 100Mbps on LTE-A capable devices. That said, the telecommunication giant is also committed to extend the benefits of the upcoming 5G networks to as many consumers as possible.
