PLDT, Smart Crowned as Fastest Networks in PH by Ookla

PLDT along with its telecommunication subsidiary, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) have been crowned as Philippine’s fastest fixed and mobile network in the half year of 2018 by the global leader in internet testing and analysis, Ookla.

Ookla uses the Speedscore to determine the fastest network. For mobile, they based it on the measure of each provider’s download and upload speed to get the ranking of the performance of each network provider. For fixed, each carrier should have at least 3% of the sample size in the geographic area to be assessed. They take into consideration various applications connected to the fixed network to rank the performance.

Smart became the fastest mobile internet provider with the Speed Score of 14.98, after 2,118,464 LTE-capable devices in the Philippines were tested with Speedtest. Smart reportedly have an average download speed of 17.25 Mbps and average upload speeds of 7.65 Mbps.

Meanwhile, PLDT became the fasted fixed network with the Speed Score of 17.31, after observing 29,076,090 user-initiated Speedtest nationwide. An average download speeds of 22.84 Mbps and average upload speed of 23.45 Mbps are observed in PLDT devices.

It is also observed that Smart has big leads in key cities like Quezon City, Makati and Manila, while PLDT excels in Quezon City, Pasig and Manila.

These network providers do not stop improving and upgrading their service in just being crowned as the fastest. A unique report from Ookla that Smart garnered twice the speed of the competing network in Quezon City, which shows the effect of their upgrades in the said area.

Smart was also accelerating its deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) to improve the mobile data experience nationwide. This a step to their goal to cover 90% of the countries’ cities and municipality with excellence mobile data service at the end of 2018. They plan to double the number of LTE based stations and LTE equipped cell sites by the first quarter of 2019 through the use of frequencies that are compatible with CA-capable smartphones to ensure fast, affordable, reliable and high capacity mobile internet to customers.

On the other hand, PLDT has an estimated capital expenditure of Php58 billion this year, which focuses on historic levels of resources that support network transformation. PLDT also focus on the deployment of fiber networks, which include fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and hybrid and hybrid fiber technologies that can step up the fiber-speed broadband to all DSL subscribers by 2019.
