Based on the MoU, the target location of the pilot deployment of 5G will be in Luzon because it is the country's most populated area. They wanted to explore industry partnerships, collaboration with schools and test the limits of the 5G network.

“Our partnership with Ericsson is part of our commitment to bring to the country the latest technologies to improve the experience of our customers, as well as boost the digital transformation of enterprises and industries,” - PLDT-Smart chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan
“We are happy to partner with Smart to pioneer 5G in the Philippines. We believe first movers in 5G can reshape the market, grow market share and increase revenue streams. Combining improved capacity and ultra-low latency, 5G will help realize new use cases and business models and capture new revenue opportunities by addressing industry digitalization,” said Martin Wiktorin, Head of Ericsson Singapore, Brunei, Philippines and Pacific Islands

Smart had been preparing for the 5G network since 2016 and they currently have over 2,000 5G-ready sites. The 5G network will revolutionize the way Filipinos enjoy Internet of Things (IoT), particularly in healthcare and smart cities.

Smart partnered up with different companies to test the 5G network. In 2006, they first partnered up with Nokia and had obtained a 5G speed of 2. 5Gbps. Months later, they partner up with Huawei Technologies to develop strategies on commercializing the network.

Last June, they opened up its 5G Technolab as a flagship facility for research, development and implementation of 5G networks. Also, with the help of Huawei, the network speed went up to 14Gbps which match the second set of global standards.

PLDT, Smart's parent company, fully support network transformation. They invested a total of Php58 billion for the transformation of fiber broadband for the improvement of network services.
