Xiaomi Redmi 6 Review; Not Your Ordinary Budget-Friendly Smartphone!

Since the launch of Xiaomi products in the Philippines, we've heard so many good things about their mobile phones, laptops, TVs, accessories, and home products. Recently, they have risen the curtains for their newest entry-level smartphone, Xiaomi Redmi 6.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Review; Not Your Ordinary Budget-Friendly Smartphone!
Xiaomi Redmi 6 Review; Not Your Ordinary Budget-Friendly Smartphone!

Last April, Redmi 5, its predecessor, was considered as one of the best entry-level smartphones, and many users were very much satisfied with it. So, the Xiaomi Redmi 6 has big shoes to fill in. Is it a hit or a miss? Here's our full review.

After opening the box, we were greeted by a gray-colored Redmi 6 phone, a USB to MicroUSB cable, power adapter, SIM ejector pin and a few papers that contains some info about the phone. There are no earphones inside the package, but we are not entirely sure if this is true for the actual retail box as ours is a review unit and arrived already opened.

On the first sight, you'll get enticed with its premium looks that could par with midrange smartphones aesthetically. However, it has the feel of plastic build when inspected thoroughly, but considering its price its quite okay. We can't really judge a book by its cover, so lets dig in deeper.

The Redmi 6 measures 147.5mm x 71.5mm x 8.3mm and weighs 146 grams, which was slightly smaller and lighter than its predecessor. It comfortably sits with one hand because of it smooth but non-slip texture. Controls of the phone are ergonomically designed as users can enjoy the functions of the phone easily.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 - Front

The phone is available in four colors: Gray, Blue, Gold and Rose Gold. The variety of colors is a thumbs up because it matches any type of personality in the market. Our team was able to enjoy the gray Redmi 6 and it looks classy, but not too flashy. It is perfect for those who want their phones' look simple but elegant.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 - Back
Dual Rear Cameras, Flash, Fingerprint Sensor, and Loudspeaker Grill at the Back

It still sports the fingerprint sensor at the back for additional security measures for users. It is highly sensitive, since it only took us 2 clicks for it to store our fingerprint. It was really convenient because with just a light touch on the sensor it unlocks the phone.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 - Bottom
Primary Microphone and MicroUSB 2,0 Port at the Bottom

They maintained the usage of MircoUSB 2.0 for charging and external connection, which is good because of its wide availability in the market, however, it feels a bit old as the current standard is already USB Type-C. Beside the MicroUSB is the primary microphone for calls and recording.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 - Right
Volume Rocker and Power Button on the Right

The volume rocker and power button rest on the right side of the phone, while on its left are the two trays, one tray is for SIM only, while the second tray carries another SIM and a MicroSD card. Meaning, it is a true dual SIM phone as it has dedicated slot for storage expansion.

Overall, the phone looks elegant and classy despite of its affordable price tag. Of course, it is not something that makes people drool over its design, but nonetheless, it is a phone you will not be ashamed to take out of your pocket and show to the lurking public.

Moving on to its display, the Xiaomi Redmi 6 sports a 5.45-inch screen with 720 x 1440 pixels resolution. It boasts a 18:9 aspect ratio and covers 80.5% of the phone's front with 295 pixels per inch density.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Multi-touch Test Result
Multi-touch Test Result

Our eyes were satisfied with the display of the phone. We enjoyed watching movies and playing high definition games like Tekken without any issues.  It scored 10 on the multi-touch test, so all interactive games are played without missing a touch. It has good brightness when indoors, however, in outdoor, the brightness seems to be low even at full bar.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Software

The Redmi 6 runs with Android 8.1 Oreo operating systems and Xiaomi's very own MIUI Global 9. All apps are placed on the home screen, but it still gives off a clean interface because you can still sort apps in a folder. It has the classic swipe down from the top to show the notifications and other menus, while swiping it to the left will give some shortcuts and widgets. The users can easily customize their home screen with the use of the selection of themes available in the Themes app.

There were a lot of pre-installed apps like  Mi's core apps, Microsoft (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Skype and OneNote) and Google apps.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Benchmark Scores
Benchmark Scores

The Redmi 6 is equipped with 2GHz octa-core 64-bit Helio A22 processor paired with PowerVR GE8320 graphics. It has a two versions either 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory or 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory. Both variants are quite generous offer for the price. Memory is expandable up to 256GB with MicroSD card in its dedicated slot.

To test the performance of this device, we ran various benchmark apps and here are the results:

  • AnTuTu - 75,312
  • Geekbench - 799 (Single Core)
  • Geekbench - 3,651 (Multi Core)
  •  PCMark Work 2.0 Performance - 4,078
  • 3DMark - 9,622 (Ice Storm Unlimited)
  • 3DMark - 7,880 (Ice Storm Extreme)
  • 3DMark - 581 (Sling Shot)

We were quite impressed on how smooth Redmi 6 in terms of gaming. We played games like Tekken and did not experience troublesome lags while playing the game. For an entry-level smartphone, this deserves a round of applause. Truly, the octa-core processor did not let us down. The RAM, the working memory, is also impressive. Even while playing games, other apps are working fast simultaneously.

We have experienced times that the phone will warm up a bit, but it is not alarming because eventually it cools down.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Camera Interface
Camera Interface

In terms of camera, Xiaomi claimed Redmi 6 as the "entry level dual-camera king". It is one of the major upgrades of this Redmi handset over its predecessor. It now sports 12MP + 5MP rear cameras, as opposed to just one in Redmi 5, with AI technology that automatically blurs background on portrait mode, detects scenes or backgrounds, and more. Both shooters have an aperture of f/2.2.

Meanwhile, there is a 5MP module mounted in the front for taking selfies, and has Beautify AI technology too among other features.

After utilizing the Redmi 6's camera, we could say that we are so in love on how it captures photos when outdoor. The colors are so vibrant as what our eyes saw. The outdoor portrait perfectly blurred the background to turn the attention on the person. The panorama feature gave us more area coverage than what we could ask for and we are so delighted by it. It can be perfect for capturing the vast sea or the sparkling city lights.

When indoors, the camera still does its job nicely as long as there is proper lighting. However, grainy or blurry images are inevitable when the subject being captured is moving to too fast or when in low light situations.

Moving on to its selfie gaming, it captures photos accurately when in normal mode, but in Beautify mode all faces are either smoothened, slimmed or had eyes enlarged depending on the user. Nonetheless, the front camera outputs are more than acceptable, especially when you think that it only has a 5MP resolution not to mention it is a budget-friendly handset.

The Redmi 6 has a dual SIM slot that can support 4G/LTE connections for fast mobile internet on the go. The calls we have received are clear, even calls that utilize the use of the internet. Text messages are sent and received without any signal problems. We are also delighted that it supports USB OTG in its MicroUSB 2.0 port, because nowadays its a necessity for school, work and leisure. The 3.5mm audio port handled our beloved earphones well and gave us clear music. Of course, it also has the basic connectivity standards like WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, all of which work perfectly without any issue.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 PC Mark Battery Life Score
PC Mark Battery Life Score

A little downside for this device is that it only has a 3000mAh battery rather than 3300mAh of its predecessor. We all know the more stamina of the battery, the more photos we can take, right? However, we really should not complain because based on our PC Mark Battery Life Test, it can work for 8 hours and 46 minutes. We can watch at most 9 episodes of our favorite Korean or American series that we like without it running out of juice. Based on our observation, it only takes less than 2 hours for it to be fully charged.

Indeed, Xiaomi Redmi 6 is a nifty smartphone that offers lots of commendable features, such as the clear HD display for binge watching your favorite Korean dramas, nice AI-powered cameras for capturing everyday moments, and decent battery life to enjoy the best of both worlds.

In terms of price, it sells for Php7,490 for 3GB RAM with 32GB internal memory or Php8, 990 for 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM combination. It is really a budget-friendly device with great specs-to-price ratio. So, if you are coming from Redmi 5A or similar handsets, it is a good option to look at if you are planning to upgrade. However, for Redmi 5 users, we cannot say the same, unless you are after its dual rear shooters.
