Backed by the recent PayPal Global Freelancer Study, the gig economy is said to show significant growth in the Philippines through the country's rising millennial population.

According to the said report, 9 out of 10 freelancers in the country are under 40 years old – suggesting that the segment has a strong presence of millennials. With this, PayPal claimed that the “emergence of millennials” will introduce a new reality to the country’s growing gig economy.

“Millennials will occupy the majority of the global workforce in three years. They are the on-the-go generation, with highly differentiated preferences when it comes to work. They like working from home and value autonomy. That’s why freelancing comes so naturally to them,” Nagesh Devata, General Manager for PayPal Southeast Asia Cross-Border Trade, addressed.

Moreover, the company explained that the rapid development of digital platforms and marketplaces has likewise helped drive the growth of the freelancing community. In fact, according to various researches, one out of five Filipino workers will be working as a freelancer by 2020.
