OPPO F9 Review; Power Up in 5 Minutes

Communication is one of the most important activities of a human-being. Through the years, communicating become easier with the use of phones, specifically our smartphones. But, just like us humans, smartphones get tired and their battery gets depleted. When talking over the phone for long hours, it could trigger battery drain, leaving us disconnected to our love ones for a while. OPPO, known of its trendy, innovative and Selfie Expert devices, introduces the OPPO F9 with VOOC Flash Charge that can give users 2 hour talk in just 5 minutes of charging.

The OPPO F9 became the talk of the town because of its VOOC Flash Charge. But, we all know that it is just one of the many features of the F9, and it has a lot more to offer. So, let us dig in deeper and see what it has stored for us.

It is claimed that 2018 is the year of the notch, and the OPPO F9 is no exemption. However, it is way smaller than that of the Apple iPhone X. It is small enough that OPPO compares it a water droplet, thus the so-called waterdrop screen. This one of the most obvious differences with its predecessor, OPPO F7. And, this little tweak gives it a huge face lift, in fact, the OPPO F9 is one of the most stunning handsets from the global brand, and the most attractive among all the F series.

OPPO F9 Front

The device measures 156.7mm x 74mm x 8mm and weighs 169 grams. It has curved edges and ergonomically positioned buttons which make the device sit perfectly on our hands and increase the usability of the device.

The front showcases a 6.3-inch display with a waterdrop notch at the top that accommodates the 25MP front shooter. It also has a Corning Gorilla Glass 6, and a pre-installed plastic film as an added layer of protection.

OPPO F9 Bottom

A dedicated Dual Nano SIM card and MicroSD card is located at the left side of the screen Also, volume rockers are below it. The power button dominates the right side of the device. While, the speakers, MicroUSB port, 3.5mm audio jack and microphone are all located at the bottom of the device.

OPPO F9 Back

We all loved the color schemes of OPPO F7, but OPPO F9 step it up with  Sunrise Red, Twilight Blue and Starry Sky variants. We are able to play with the Twilight Blue variant and its petal-like gradient is a head turner and definitely gives the premium vibe.

The fingerprint scanner, the dual cameras and its LED flash along with the OPPO brand are placed at the back. The fingerprint scanner is thoughtfully placed since it can be easily touched by our index finger. Of course, frequent cleaning of the back and fingerprint scanner is recommended since fingerprints dominate the device, making it unclean most of the time. Thankfully, there is a free clear case in the package that minimizes the frequency of cleaning, and protects the device from scratches.

OPPO F9 Display

The OPPO F9 flaunts a 6.3-inch LTPS TFT Full HD+ screen with 1080x2340 resolution that translates to 409ppi. Additionally, the display has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and occupies the majority of phone's facade, 90.8% to be exact. Many would disagree, but the OPPO F9's notch design is unique and is pleasing to the eye. Besides, there is no option to 'hide' it.

The device gave us a good viewing experience. It also has a decent brightness under direct sunlight, however, we suggest adjusting the brightness level manually, as the auto brightness give us a slightly dark display most of the times.

It also has a Night Shield feature for eye comfort of the users. It protects the eyes from blue light and users has the option to adjust the tone further to their preference. Moreover, it scored 10 on the multi-touch test, so playing with multiple fingers will not be a problem.

OPPO F9 Software

The F9 runs on Android 8.1 (Oreo) with ColorOS 5.2 on top of it. ColorOS 5.2 makes the interface more user-friendly, and takes multi-tasking into another level. F9 has a Smart Bar that helps the user conveniently take screenshots, record the screen and navigate through different apps while gaming or watching videos. Additionally, it also has a smart scanner and Google Lens that could recognize what your lens see and fit it to your needs.

The device does not have an app drawer, but you can organize your apps with a folder. F9 has a Game Space where you can place your games and  disable interference from apps running in the background. It also optimizes the graphics and sounds of your games.

The device comes with a number of pre-installed apps like Google applications, Lazada and many more.

The device is powered by 64-bit octa-core processor paired with Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. It has a 6GB RAM, which is an upgrade from its predecessor, while it has a 64GB internal storage that can be expanded up to 256GB via MicroSD card. We know that Helio P60 is the same chipset as the OPPO F7, and there are people who don't like MediaTek at all, but this chip along with generous memory are still quite a treat for a mid-range smartphone.

OPPO F9 Benchmark Results:
  • AnTuTu – 137,164
  • GeekBench –  1,480 (Single Core)

  • 3DMark – 939 (Sling Shot Exteme – Vulkan)

After utilizing the phone as our daily driver, we can say we enjoy using it. Its processor truly does its job perfectly. All activities on the phone are done with a speed. Its 6GB RAM is no joke because multitasking with a lot of apps is very much possible without experiencing any lags. There are times that the device warmed up after long hours of usage, but it was not alarming. In addition to its smooth performance, we love the gaming experience the F9 gave to us.

The fingerprint scanner runs smoothly as well as the face recognition, so OPPO F9 deserves a round of applause in terms of security.

Since OPPO is known for being the Selfie Expert, F9 flaunts it with a 25MP front shooter with A.I. Beautification 2.1, which can recognize 296 facial points for smoother selfie outcome. While, its rear snappers boast two camera modules with 16MP + 2MP sensors. If we are not mistaken, this is the first of the F-series to have a dual rear shooter.

We were amazed with the features of F9 like HDR, Super Vivid, AR stickers, Filters, Expert Mode, Portrait Mode that has 4 different sub-mode, Slowmo and panorama. The AR stickers are really cute and unique. It's something you can enjoy with friends because it recognizes more than 3 faces and adds stickers to it.

OPPO F9 really lives up the brand name of being a Selfie Expert. The front camera produces beautiful selfies or groupies with lots of features to  toy around, such as A.I. Beautification, filters, Depth Effect, Super Vivid, HDR and stickers.

Moving on to the rear camera, the colors produced are really bright, sharp, realistic, and full of details, even in 2x digital zoom. The dynamic range is pretty good too! The portrait mode makes the subject stand out in the midst of the photo, and there's tons of lighting effect as well. Moreover, it produces great bokeh with sharp details of the subject in the foreground.

The night or low light shots for both the front and back cameras look pretty decent too. However, digital noise is quite noticeable in really dark situations, and the focusing speed is noticeably slower when compared to shooting in bright environments. Nonetheless, we are loving F9's cameras!

F9 has the usual connectivity features like Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, dual SIM with LTE and GPS. The GPS on the device ran smoothly when we use it, while on the bus going to Bicol. It also has a compass tool which is perfect for travelling.

It has a tripple card slot, two slots dedicated for two Nano SIM cards, and one slot for a MicroSD card, so no need to worry between choosing dual SIM functionality or storage expansion, as you can do both.

Phone calls were clear and we didn't have any problems with the device's connectivity. The earphones included in the box has a seamless connection with the device and produce clear sounds. Additionally, the USB port is OTG ready, however, it is still Micro and not Type-C.

The F9 flaunts a 3500mAh battery with OPPO's proprietary fast charging technology - VOOC flash charge. To achieve this, OPPO carefully studied and tested on how they can give the device high current while having a low voltage charging for longer battery life and faster charging. Some users may worry that the device may overheat, but worry no more! It is layered with 5 levels of protection to ensure no overheating while charging will occur.

With such a feature, it is marketed to the mass consumers as a device that can last 2 hours of talk time in just 5 minutes of charging. And, we are happy to report that this is indeed true!

Based on our own testing, we charged the device when the battery was 0% or completely drained for 5 minutes, turned it on, called someone, and let the call flow for 2 hours. After two hours of call, the phone was still alive, and still has 1% battery. By the way, the F9 had 10% battery (from 0%) after charging for 5 minutes.

We also run the PC Mark battery test, and it scored to 9 hours and 53 minutes. During our Bicol trip, we used it heavily, and it lasted the whole 10 hour trip. On the other hand, when use with minimal mobile data, few calls and texts, it can last up to more than a day. Meanwhile, the charging time from 0% to 100% took 1 hour and 37 minutes using the VOOC Flash Charge.

OPPO really did satisfy our expectations! We can say that OPPO F9 is TeknoGadyet approved. F9 gave us quite a treat with its amazing display, premium unique looks, excellent camera quality and VOOC flash charge. F9 can be your everyday companion and tell your stories through its lenses.
