The beta version of YouTube Shorts has arrived in the Philippines, according to YouTube. Shorts is the platform's new short-form video experience, allowing users to make short, engaging videos using only their phones. Since its first announcement in September 2020, YouTube has expanded the functionality to 26 countries, including the Philippines, bringing the total number of countries where YouTube is available to over 100.

While users could already watch short-form films on the platform, they will also have access to Shorts' creation tools, including a multi-segment camera for stringing numerous video segments together, the option to record with music, regulate speed settings, and more. YouTube will also provide new features like:

  • Adding text to specific points in videos
  • Automatically adding captions to Shorts
  • Recording up to 60 seconds with the Shorts camera
  • Adding clips from a phone's gallery to add to recordings made with the Shorts camera
  • Adding basic filters to color correct Shorts, with more effects to come in the future

The ability to sample audio from other Shorts and the billions of videos available on YouTube is one of the new capabilities, opening up a whole new world of creativity. As a result, individuals may put their own creative perspective on the content they enjoy watching and help it reach a new audience. Creators will influence anything from reacting to favorite jokes to trying out a creator's latest recipe or re-enacting humorous routines. They will be able to opt-out if they don't want their long-form film remixed.

Todd Sherman, YouTube Shorts' Global Product Manager, stated, "We aim to make it easy and exciting to create Shorts." “We'll be adding more things for folks to try as we continue to expand Shorts with our creators and artists,” he added.

Providing a consistent YouTube viewing experience

Helping consumers discover new Shorts and creators is also an important part of the product experience. That's why even before the creation tools were announced, YouTube added a new Shorts section to the YouTube homepage, launched a new watch experience that allows viewers to easily swipe vertically from one video to the next, and will soon add a Shorts tab on mobile that will make it easier for people to watch Shorts with a single tap.

The YouTube Shorts player has now topped 6.5 billion daily views throughout the world.

Shorts will be incorporated into the YouTube experience that people are already familiar with: if they hear a clip of a song on Shorts, they will quickly access the entire song, view the music video, or learn more about the artist.

Providing assistance to mobile creators

YouTube has added an entire generation of producers to transform their ideas into businesses and establish themselves as the next generation of media enterprises. The corporation has paid out more than $30 billion to innovators, artists, and media companies in the last three years.

YouTube has been looking at various methods to monetize Shorts and compensate artists for their content, including the recently announced YouTube Shorts Fund, which will distribute $100 million over the course of 2021-2022.

“We understand that getting this properly will take time, and we're only getting started. We can't wait for you to explore Shorts and help us create a world-class short-form video experience right here on YouTube,” Sherman said.

Shorts beta is now accessible in additional countries and will soon be available to everyone.
