SKK Mobile Glimpse 3G

INTRODUCTION:

The SKK Mobile Glimpse 3G is an incremental upgrade of its predecessor SKK Mobile Glimpse. You would easily guess that one of the improvements is the high speed mobile data connectivity because of the naming scheme.

Along with 3G capability, the size of RAM is one of the positive changes (from 256MB to 512MB). The internal storage is now 4GB and the GPS is now present. At the heart of the device is the same dual core processor found on it sibling - the MediaTek MT6572 clocked at 1GHz each.

HARDWARE:

Front

The front is mainly occupied by the 4-inch screen, below it is the capacitive menu, home and back keys. The home button is just printed like the two other keys. Above the display you will find the earpiece grill, then the secondary camera on its left.

The main camera is center-aligned somewhere at the upper portion in the back. On its left is the loudspeaker grill while below it is the Glimpse 3G logo.

The top holds the micro USB port and the 3.5mm audio jack, while on the bottom you will see the microphone pin hole together with the slit for opening the back plate.

The design is pretty much the same with the original Glimpse except for the home button. The build quality is good, there is no gap to be found, nor you will hear any creaks when using it.

DISPLAY:

The display is made of ordinary panel, viewing the phone on left or right sides are OK, however, the colors and screen clarity are washed out when looking at the display from the top or bottom. The multi-touch support is limited only to two fingers.

SENSOR:

Like its predecessor, the only sensor installed in this phone is the accelerometer. There is no ambient light sensor which means you need to adjust the brightness of your phone manually.

The SKK Mobile Glimpse 3G is powered by a  1GHz dual core Cortex-A7 CPU, Mali-400 GPU bundled with 512MB of RAM. This combination gives an acceptable benchmark results. The scores are higher than other SKK Mobile phone with the same CPU frequency.

PERFORMANCE:

Since the Glimpse 3G is basically a Glimpse with improved connectivity and RAM (other specs are just the same like camera, etc.) I will skip some of the usual routine of my review. If you need to read the phone's basic stuffs like the Interface, Telephony, Phonebook, Messaging, Email and the likes, you can go ahead to the full review of the original Glimpse on the link below.

Browsing:

The 512MB of RAM helps a lot in terms of multimedia handling, browsing using either the stock browser or Opera Mini is now smooth, it can load the webpage easily and fast plus it can now open multiple tabs without noticeable lag.

Gaming:

Modern Combat 4

The gaming department is the one that benefited a lot with the increase of RAM size. The casual games like Zombie Tsunami, Temple Run2 and Subway Surfers are now fast and fluid. Even the graphics intensive games such as Asphalt 7 and Modern Combat 4 are both playable.

If you installed a micros SD card on your phone it will be the default installation location, which means you can install games with large file, example, MC4 with around 2GB of data.

Connectivity:

3G and Tethering

With the addition of 3G you can now surf the web using your Telco's high speed mobile internet connection which you can share with your other device via WLAN hotspot, USB or Bluetooth tethering.

GPS:

GPS

Using the GPS Test, I was able to get a satellite lock in about 10 seconds, the A-GPS and EPO assistance were both on and pre-loaded before the test.

Battery:

Battery Stats

I looped a 1080p video and it managed to last for almost 4 hours before the 15% battery warning popped-up. I also played Asphalt 7 continuously and it reached more than 3 hours before the battery dropped to 15%.

CONCLUSION:

The SKK Mobile Glimpse 3G really overwhelms the original Glimpse in terms of performance. The added amount of RAM helps a lot to accomplish things which are not doable with its predecessor, now it can play graphics-demanding games, interface also becomes more fluid and web browsing is more enjoyable. The 3G connectivity which is essential for most of us is now included plus the GPS is also on board.

However, not all aspects are improved, the camera has the same resolution without an LED flash, the multi-touch support is still two fingers and the type of display remains the same.

PROS:

3G connectivity
Can play HD videos
Can play graphics-intensive games
Good battery life

CONS:

Low resolution camera
Only 2-point touch
No light and proximity sensor

  2. Well I bought one last weekend. I'm kind of impressed with this phone. It's fast and it can easily connect to the internet. I love it for that reason. However, I think it has some downsides too. Like for example, its battery doesn't last that long. It can go 4-6 hours on standby, but only 3-4 hours when I'm connected to the internet, or when I'm playing Pou or 2048. Another thing is that its camera is so-old school. 2mp and no flash at all. Well, I think that's what you get for a phone that costs a few bucks. I love it and maybe I'll do away with it for the meantime.
