O+ 360 Alpha Plus Unboxing and Review, Digital Beauty Regimen
O+ USA introduced one of their amazing innovations called Back Touch Technology last November 2014 and the first devices to have that kind of breakthrough is the O+ 360 Alpha. After about eight months, it now has a direct successor, the O+ 360 Alpha Plus.
The O+ 360 Alpha Plus is an entry-level offering from the O+ 360 family and it is also the most affordable among the group. It has a suggested retail price of Php4,995, but it can be yours for Php3,995 or 1000 pesos off when you buy one or before August 31. It sports a 4.5-inch IPS display powered by 1.3GHz quad core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage.
Unboxing and Hands-on Video
The Alpha Plus may be an entry-level device, but its packaging looks premium. Sliding the inner box from the outer box, you will be greeted by the unit lying comfortably in a black carton. Underneath it, you will find 3 more separate boxes wherein you can find the battery, charger, USB cable, headset, user manual, warranty card plus 8GB of micro SD card and a screen protector as freebies. To learn more, you can watch our video unboxing and hands-on above.
It has 4.5-inch screen with qHD resolution, which translates to about 245 pixels per inch. This pixel density together with the IPS panel, provides a clear display with good viewing angles. In terms of touch support, it can register five fingers at the same time without issue.
The sensors in this device are accelerometer, proximity and light, all of which are working properly during tests and in real world application.
It scored more than 20K in Antutu, more than 7K in Quadrant and 1225, 896 and 1530 in Vellamo Multicore, Metal and Browser respectively. These scores are typical for Android devices with this kind of chipset and based on the results, we can say that it performed just right. Meanwhile, in NenaMark2, it got an impressive 61.2 fps, which is very seldom, especially for smartphone with MT6582 processor. On the other hand, in PC Mark Work Test it got 2006.
The O+ 360 Alpha Plus runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and the interface remains pretty much similar with other O+ devices. If you want to know how the UI looks like, you can check our O+ EVO 4G Review or our O+ Grande Unboxing and Review.
CAMERA and VIDEO:
Selfie Fix Camera Interface
One of the main selling points of the Alpha Plus is its camera, apart from the stock camera UI, it also got another interface that comes with the Selfie Fix, a software technology that enhances the images to your desired output. Its features include, Beauty Fix, Makeup, Accessories and Stickers. The first one lets you change the skin tone, face contouring, makes your nose pointed, remove blemishes and more. Meanwhile, the second one is self-explanatory, it allows you to add different kind of 'makeup', like foundation, lipstick, blush on, eye shadow and more. The third one lets you add accessories, namely headdress, beard, glasses and earrings. The last one gives you the ability to add frame, doodle and filter.
Selfie Fix Innovations
The Selfie Fix can be used for any photo, it does not matter whether the picture is taken from the front or rear camera, whether you use the stock camera interface or another app, the important thing is that the image is in the DCIM folder. This means that even if the photo is shot using another phone, you can still use the Selfie Fix features as long as it is in the DCIM folder. By the way, between the stock camera UI and the Selfie Fix interface, I recommend the use of the former, since the latter does not come with auto focus nor tap-to-focus feature.
Sample Shots and Videos:
1080p Sample Video
720p Sample Video
The main camera can shoot photos up to 2560x1920 pixels and capture videos up to 1080p resolution. The output image is expected for a phone with a 5MP camera,. Images taken when there is good lighting condition tend to be alive and vibrant. In addition, the photos shot at night are highly usable, the colors are close to actual thing and the resolved details are good.
Marvel's Contest of Champions
Temple Run 2
Storage and Install Location
The 1.3GHz quad core processor combined with 1GB of RAM performs well on almost any casual games, such as Temple Run 2 and Criminal Case to name a few. Meanwhile, graphics-heavy games like Marvel's Contests of Champions, Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5 are all playable, although in low-medium settings.
It has a unified storage and out of 8GB ROM, the available space is 6.03GB. If this is not enough, just use bigger capacity micro SD card and it will be the default storage, which means apps and games will be installed on the external storage.
The 3G high speed data can be set on either SIM card, which you can share via tethering and hotspot. Other connectivity, includes WiFi, Bluetooth, Wireless Display, Wireless Printing and 3.5mm audio jack.
Productivity wise, it has Calculator, Calendar, Clock, File Manager, Note, Sound Recorder and ToDo. There are no PDF viewer and document editor, but you can simply get one for free in the Play Store.
Location and GPS
The phone has GPS with A-GPS support, location mode can be set to device only, battery saving and high accuracy. Based on our test, it was able to get a satellite lock in about 20 seconds with data pre-loaded.
In our video loop test, it lasted for 5 hours and 47 minutes before the battery completely drained from 100 percent. Meanwhile, using PC Mark Work Battery Life test, it got 5 hours and 35 minutes.
BT Notification, 360 Touch & Doodle Control
The BTNotification is pre-installed, it is an app you can use with O+ accessories like the O+ Time. Meanwhile, the 360 Touch tech can be enabled or disabled under the system settings, it allows you to control the phone from its back, like taking selfies and unlocking the device. On the other hand, the Doodle Control gives you the ability to control the phone even on standby mode by drawing letters or gestures on the screen.
The O+ 360 Alpha Plus is an entry-level smartphone full of features, it has back touch technology, gesture controls and of course, the Selfie Fix innovation, which is really amazing addition to its 5MP camera.
