OPPO F5 Unboxing and Hands-on

The OPPO F5 is the brand’s first smartphone to offer an almost bezel-less screen, but the device hasn’t changed much in terms of its overall look. However, it is now housed in a polycarbonate plastic, which is good at disguising itself as a metal casing.

The 6-inch smartphone is obviously big, nevertheless, through its curved edges and thoughtfully placed buttons, the F5 could still comfortably sit on our hands and could still manage one-hand usage.

Its front is dominated by the 6-inch screen with an 18:9 display. Above the display, the call speaker, and the 20-megapixel front camera are located. Similar to the brand’s other models, the device also has no capacitive buttons for navigation.

Flipping the device on its back, you’d see the 16-megapixel rear shooter, LED flash, fingerprint scanner, and the company’s logo. We recommend to use your protective case, not only for its safety, but also to protect the smartphone from dirt and fingerprint.

The volume rockers are located on the left side of the device, while the right side of the phone gives us the power/lock button and its triple card tray, which means users can now really enjoy using two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card without having to give up one.

Meanwhile, the loudspeaker, micro USB port, main microphone, and headphone jack are placed at the bottom of the device.

Going back to its display, the F5 flaunts a 6-inch 18:9 IPS full HD+ display with 2160 x 1080 resolution, translating to 402 pixels per inch. It has a good display and viewing angles, in fact, we enjoyed watching several videos on the device. However, we’re not satisfied with its brightness when we used it under the sun. Also, it only scored 5 on the multi-touch test.

SOFTWARE:

OPPO F5's Software
Software

The F5 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system, which is complemented with OPPO’s ColorOS 3.2. It has no app drawer, thus, it offers multiple home screens for your apps navigation. Meanwhile, its notification and control centers look the same to Apple’s iOS. On that note, users have to swipe down to see their notifications and swipe up for the control center, which has shortcuts for WiFi, data, Bluetooth, GPS, camera, settings, and more. For fast OPPO to OPPO file sharing, the device now has OPPO Share feature. It has Night Shield option, as well, to reduce blue light from the screen.

PERFORMANCE:

The device is powered by 64-bit Helio P23 octa-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz. Impressively, it is paired with Mali-G71MP2 GPU, which is usually seen on more expensive smartphones. It is complemented with 4GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage, as well.

To give us a preview of its performance, we ran it on various benchmark applications. Here are the results:

OPPO F5 Benchmark Scores
Benchmark Scores

  • AnTuTu – 64,487
  • 3DMark – 8,706 (Ice Storm)
  • 3DMark – 6,024 (Ice Storm Extreme)
  • 3DMark – 75 (Sling Shot)
  • 3DMark – 70 (Sling Shot Extreme)
  • PCMark – 3,063 (Work 2.0)

Its actual performance exceeded our expectations. It is really speedy even when multiple applications were opened at once. Multitasking is possible, too. It only lagged when it was already running out of battery and we’re still using it for watching video while it was connected to WiFi. Other than that, it has smooth performance, mentioning that it has decent gaming performance, too.

CAMERA:

We’re now at the most exciting feature of the OPPO F5. The device boasts a 20-megapixel A.I enabled front shooter and 16-megapixel rear camera. Upgrading its selfie game, it comes with an Artificial Intelligence Beauty Recognition technology that recognizes more than 200 facial points, skin tone and type, gender, and other facial traits. True enough, it allows us to have more natural self-photos while making sure that it enhances the images.

Both front and rear cameras could produce clear photos. At night, there were some noises, but it still gave us decent shots. Through its selfie technology, self-photos appeared more natural than other smartphone’s beautified images.

CONNECTIVITY:

The OPPO F5 has usual connectivity features, including WiFi, LTE, dual-SIM, Bluetooth, and GPS. All of these functioned well during our tests. Also, it supports 700MHz LTE for faster indoor LTE signal reception. It has OTG support, too. Overall, we never had a problem in terms of its connectivity.

BATTERY:

PC Mark Battery Test Score

The F5 is equipped with 3200mAh non-removable battery. We did two battery tests to check its stamina: the PCMark test, and our traditional video loop test. Our PCMark result shows that the device will last for only 10 hours and 31 minutes. Meanwhile, it lasted for almost 12 hours when we did our video loop test, with its brightness and volume set on its maximum level.

However, what impressed our team the most is that it could actually last for a day when we used it as our primary phone, which means we actively used it for sending SMS and email, browsing our social media accounts, watching videos, and playing games. Also, it lasted for almost three days when we only used it for sending SMS and email, and casual listening to our playlist.

CONCLUSION:

For our team, the OPPO F5 is one of the best midrange smartphones today. Considering its price, it’s nice to have a smartphone that is packed with a great camera, good battery life, and speedy performance. It is also a nice thing to have an 18:9 screen, if you love watching videos and playing games on your smartphone.

Priced at PhP15,990, the OPPO F5 deserves your attention, most especially if you love taking selfies but doesn’t want to compromise other important smartphone's features and specs.
