Nokia X Unboxing, Preview And Initial Impression |
INTRODUCTION:
Nokia X is one of the three Android based smartphones (along with the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL) announced globally by Nokia last February. Last March 11, Nokia Philippines formally introduced it to the country followed by the consumer launching held last March 29, 2014.
Nokia X was aimed to bring Android smartphone solutions to the masses, wherein their target market are those that are coming from dumb or feature phones. Locally, it cost 5990 pesos and the release of its two siblings depends on its success.
CPU Z Info |
It sports a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen display powered by a 1GHz dual core Cortex-A5 processor bundled with 512MB of RAM. The chipset used is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Play. It runs on Nokia X Software platform which is basically a forked Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
The device supports dual SIM dual standby with 3G capability, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS with an offline map solution. Camera wise, there is a lone 3MP shooter in the back and none in the front.
UNBOXING:
Retail Package |
The retail package consists of the unit, 1500mAh battery, charger, headset, manual and warranty card. There is no USB cable, but since it uses a standard micro USB, you probably have one.
HARDWARE:
Front |
The front is mostly occupied by the display, the bezels are of reasonable size. A single capacitive key can be found at the bottom of the screen while the Nokia logo and hidden sensors are located above the display.
Back |
The back is not prone in catching dirt and smudges, here you can find the 3MP fixed focus main camera somewhere in the upper portion, the Nokia logo in the center and the loudspeaker slit at the lower right.
Battery, MicroSD and SIM Slots |
Removing the back plate is a bit tricky, actually it also covers all the sides. Once removed, the battery compartment will be revealed together with the micro SD and two micro SIM slots.
Left |
Right |
The left of the phone is kept bare while the right side has all the control keys, the volume rocket and the power/lock key.
Top |
Bottom |
At the bottom, you will find the micro USB port comfortably placed in the center while the top holds the 3.5mm audio jack.
The build quality of the Nokia X is outstanding and very sturdy. The overall designs resemble a lot with the Asha lines and some of the Lumia smartphones.
DISPLAY:
2-point touch |
The phone has a 4-inch display and a 800x480 resolution, it is not spectacular in any case, but the color rendition is good and the brightness is acceptable. The screen also supports multiple touch, but only up to two fingers.
SENSORS:
Sensors |
The sensors embedded inside the Nokia X are the proximity, accelerometer and light. All of them works fine when put under test using Sensor Box and CPU-Z.
BENCHMARKS:
Antutu 6722 |
Quadrant 2912 |
NenaMark2 30.4 fps |
Vellamo HTML5 1145 & Metal 365 |
The Nokia X uses a Snapdragon S4 Play SoC which is technically a chipset available more than a year ago. If I am not mistaken, this is the same thing used in the original Cherry Mobile Flare. This chipset employs a 1GHz dual core Cortex-A5 CPU and Adreno 203. The benchmark results are similar to those old devices that use MT6577 chipset. However, when compared to phones with the newer MT6572 SoC, the Nokia X scores are way behind.
INITIAL VERDICT:
Many have waited for the released of the Nokia's first Android smartphone - the Nokia X. The build quality and design are superb, just what you can expect from Nokia. However, the processing prowess of the Nokia X is somewhat on the average side, honestly, the SoC used is a bit old.
