Based on its shipment volume in the country, Cherry Mobile remained as the country’s market leader for it has a strong presence in the lower tier cities and rural areas where their products are competitively priced.

Comes behind the local brand is the Korean tech giant Samsung. IDC explained that the brand was able to maintain its reputation despite the Note 7 issue. Also, its Galaxy J series becomes its key products in emerging markets, including the Philippines.

Meanwhile, OPPO, Vivo, and ASUS bagged the third, fourth, and fifth spots respectively.

“Heavy marketing campaigns and lucrative sales promoter incentives enables these brands to strengthen their mindshare in the local market, increase their shipments, and grow their respective market shares. The assault of these brands affected the sales of some of the players, resulting in them reducing their supplies, which ultimately impacted overall smartphone shipments,” Jensen Ooi, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC ASEAN.

On the other hand, the research firm noted that a clear trend has recently emerged in the local smartphone market where consumers are shifting to smartphones with higher specs and better features other than popularity.
