Based on the latest Opensignal study, “The State of Mobile Network Experience in 2020: One year into the 5G Era," the Philippines took the fourth spot in terms of Video Experience improvement from January 1 to March 30, 2020, as compared to the same period in 2019. Our country got an increased percentage of 32%, behind Thailand, who got the third spot with 39.8%, and the first and second placer Senegal and Nepal with more than 40%. The study is based on 43,338,654 devices with more than 87.5 billion measurements.

“Our continuous investments in our network and our ongoing upgrades and expansion projects across the country have allowed us to provide our customers with the best mobile data experience,” said Mario G. Tamayo, PLDT-Smart Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering.
“As operators in the Philippines reported a dramatic surge in data consumption, we found that the quality of the video streaming experience over 4G connections was resilient,” Opensignal’s Hardik Khatri wrote. The study covered the period Sept. 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 and examined the mobile experience in urban and rural areas in the National Capital Region, North and Central Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Gathered on November 1, 2019, to January 29, 2020, and based on 659,883,359 measurements from 288,492 devices, the data revealed that Smart delivers a “fair” video experience as it scored 55 points, that is a 15.6% increase over the last report. On the other hand, Globe recorded just 39.8 points out of 100, which puts it into the "poor" category or just 0.3 points shy to be in the "fair" classification.

Meanwhile, on OpenSignal’s 4G-only Video Experience scale, Smart is still the clear winner with 62.4 on a 0-100 scale, which makes it in the "Good" category. Under this rating means that Smart provides its subscribers with faster loading times and less stuttering, even in higher resolutions. Meanwhile, Globe scored 43.7, which makes it into the "Fair" category, meaning, the video experience for its subscribers is acceptable at lower resolutions.

“We’ve managed to stay ahead of the growth of our data traffic by continuing to invest heavily in our network,” explained Mario G. Tamayo, senior vice president for Network Planning and Engineering for PLDT and Smart.
“Of course, we had no idea that something like COVID-19 was coming.  But, in a sense, our network expansion efforts were, shall we say, providential.  At least, during this rather difficult period, we can help people come together in prayer to seek God’s blessings and help,” Panlilio said.
