Huawei recently launched the Y9s in the Philippines. As one of the brand’s affordable smartphones, its impressive that the device still has competitive specs and trendy features, just like its pop-up camera and stunning design.
Huawei Y9s Hands-on and Initial Impressions |
Now tapped as our main driver, we’re giving you some of our impressions about the Y9s. Let’s start!
PHYSICAL:
Huawei never failed to offer a premium-looking smartphone. Just like its brothers, the Y9s has a sophisticated body – thanks to its 3D glass curved back. It is also available in two striking color variants, such as Midnight Black and Breathing Crystal. Meanwhile, our team received the latter, which is a total-head turner as it flaunts a flagship-like colorway.
Breathing Crystal |
Similar to other devices available in the market today, the Y9s sports an all-screen display as it is equipped with a pop-up camera. As a result, it offers an immersive 6.59-inch FullView IPS display, which is ideal for watching videos and playing games.
Right Side |
However, it settles for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor instead of giving us a trendy in-display fingerprint scanner. Speaking of, its volume keys and power/lock button are placed on its right side. The latter also works as a fingerprint sensor. Its left part, on the other hand, is unoccupied.
Pop-up Camera |
Moving on, you’d see its 16MP pop-up camera and SIM card tray on the top, while its 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker are located at the bottom.
Bottom |
Flip the device on its back to reveal its protruding triple rear cameras. Since it has a glass body, the device can easily attract fingerprints and smudges. It is slippery, too, that’s why it’s better if you would use its protective case.
CAMERA:
The Huawei Y9s is banking on a 48-megapixel main shooter, coupled with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies, it boasts a 16-megapixel snapper.

For now, we can say that the Y9s has good camera performance. It has enough details, however, we noticed that it lacks some sharpness sometimes.

INITIAL VERDICT:
The Huawei Y9s is a good smartphone at its price point. As of now, we can’t say if it can really battle out its rivals as we felt like we’re still looking for its best offering. However, we can already assure you that it can satisfy your mobile needs.
In case you missed it, Huawei loaded the Y9s with a Kirin 710F octa-core processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, and 4,000mAh battery. With these specs, we expect that the device can accompany us throughout our test when we start using it intensively.
Consumers can score the Y9s for the price of Php13,990.
We’ll update you as soon as we finish our full review. So, stay tuned!
