According to SMC Infrastructure, their team determined that the downtime was caused by a break in their fiber optic network. However, they are still currently investigating the root cause of the damage, but there are indications that a big vehicular accident may have had a role.

To help alleviate traffic congestion, SMC Tollways deployed additional personnel to assist motorists. In addition, they reopened affected toll plazas and waived toll fees. Overall, around 84,000 vehicles traveled via the expressways from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 17.

Motorists whose Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) accounts were deducted at the time of entrance will receive electronic refunds in their Autosweep accounts. While the system was being restored at about 9 a.m., SMC decided to keep toll plaza barriers up to allow all affected motorists to pass through for free.
