Months after the initial installation, the high-speed link is proving to be a game-changer for the lakeside community of Brgy. Subay in Cardona, breaking through geographical barriers that previously made fiber deployment impossible.
Breaking Barriers with Beam Technology
Because Talim Island is situated in the middle of Laguna de Bay, laying traditional submarine cables was deemed unfeasible. Google Taara’s solution uses Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC)—essentially using light to transmit data through the air.
- 11.8 Kilometer Span: The system beams fiber-like speeds across the lake, connecting the island to the mainland without a single underwater cable.
- Instant Progress: Unlike traditional infrastructure projects that take years, this "wireless fiber" delivers immediate high-speed internet to remote lakeside residents.
Empowering Education and Local Governance

The impact of this technology is most visible in the island's schools and barangay offices. With stable, high-speed access, the community is moving away from the digital divide:
- Enhanced Classrooms: Teachers at Subay Elementary and National High School can now stream educational videos and access online research materials, creating a more interactive learning environment.
- Streamlined Government Services: Barangay workers and school clerks have reported significantly faster processing times for online reports and government filings, which were previously delayed by poor connectivity.
- Professional Growth: Local educators are now able to participate in webinars and virtual training sessions, keeping them updated with modern teaching standards.
A Commitment to Inclusive Innovation
The deployment is part of the PLDT Group’s broader strategy to use "last-mile" technologies to ensure no Filipino is left behind. By leveraging Google Taara’s innovation, PLDT is addressing the unique challenges of the Philippine archipelago.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of Quality Education (SDG 4) and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9).
