INTRODUCTION:

Remember when a wave of mobile phones made the selfie mirror camera their standout feature? Back then, not everyone realized just how useful it was – until it quietly disappeared from the market.

Now, with nostalgia proving to be one of the smartphone industry's most effective marketing tools, realme is bringing that familiar feature with the realme 16 5G. But this new release offers more than just a throwback to the selfie mirror camera era. Let's dig in.

DESIGN and BUILD:

Right out of the box, the first thing you'll notice about the realme 16 5G is its camera plateau, which carries a silhouette reminiscent of the iPhone Air's design. It's clearly realme's way of offering Android loyalists a similarly sleek and minimalist aesthetic. Nestled within the same camera module is the returning circular selfie mirror camera, now upgraded with a built-in ring light.

Whether you go for the Air White or Air Black variant, the realme 16 5G is undeniably an eye-catching device. We received the latter as our demo unit, and immediately loved its shimmering matte rear panel that does a great job of resisting fingerprint smudges. When light hits the surface at different angles, the finish reveals a subtle yet striking shimmer that adds more character to the design.

Despite its plastic build, the realme 16 5G still feels surprisingly premium in the hand. Much of this comes from its ergonomically designed body and flat-edged frame, which make the device comfortable and secure to hold. The experience is further elevated by its practical one-handed usability, with the power and volume buttons positioned within easy reach for effortless access.

Of course, what's a smartphone release in 2026 without durability credentials? The realme 16 5G comes fully equipped with IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, giving users added peace of mind for everyday use. Combined with its smudge-resistant finish, the device feels durable enough to be confidently used bare without immediately reaching for a case.

Another thing worth noting about the realme 16 5G is how it managed to fit in a massive 7000mAh battery inside a slim body that weighs only 183 grams.

DISPLAY:

With a 6.57-inch display, the realme 16 5G offers just the right amount of screen real estate for daily use. Large enough for immersive viewing, yet compact enough to remain comfortable in the hand. Its bezels are slightly noticeable, but not to the extent that they take away from the device's near full-screen experience.

And we say near full-screen because the realme 16 5G houses a punch-hole selfie camera. Thankfully, it's a compromise that feels worth it, especially considering the functionality that comes with it. We'll discuss it later in this review.

On paper, the realme 16 5G's FHD+ display (2372 x 1080) pixels may sound fairly standard, but the device shines through its quality-of-life features. A good example is Extra Brightness mode, which increases screen visibility beyond the usual range. This is perfect for outdoor use when sunlight makes displays difficult to read.

If you enjoy reading books or long-form content on your phone, the realme 16 5G's VisionGuard Eye Care suite is a welcome addition. Beyond the usual eye comfort features that reduce eye strain during extended use, it also offers a paper-like display effect like a Kindle's. This gives the screen a softer, more natural look that's noticeable easier on the eyes while reading.

Users can also tweak the screen refresh rate of the realme 16 5G depending on their priorities. The 60Hz mode helps conserve battery life, while the 120Hz option delivers noticeably smoother scrolling and animations at the cost of higher power consumption.

PERFORMANCE:

Performance-wise, the realme 16 5G delivers a mixed but generally balanced experience. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 Turbo, it handles everyday tasks like productivity, messaging, social media, and multimedia consumption smoothly, even when switching between multiple apps.

However, its limitations become more apparent under heavier workloads. While it performs adequately for moderate use, more demanding tasks can push it beyond its comfort zone. Extended gaming sessions, in particular, make the trade-offs more noticeable, with occasional lag and a tendency to heat up over time.

The realme 16 5G packs plenty of AI features, but unlike other AI-heavy smartphones today, these actually feel practical instead of gimmicky. One of them is the AI Netpilot Network Engine, which intelligently optimizes connectivity to reduce gaming lag, stabilize video calls and streaming, speed up Wi-Fi-to-data handovers, manage bandwidth more efficiently, and maintain smoother connections in crowded areas.

Running or realme UI 7 based on Android 16, the realme 16 5G highlights a clean software experience, save from a few bloatware out of the box. There are tons of thoughtful customization features especially for multitasking.

Glass UI designs also make their way into this realme lineup, with the realme 16 5G highlighting translucent interface elements, layered animations, and glossy visual effects that give the software a more modern and premium feel.

CAMERA:

Housed within its camera plateau, the realme 16 5G delivers decent photography performance through its dual rear camera setup, led by a 50MP Sony IMX852 main sensor paired with a 2MP depth sensor.

In daylight conditions, the device captures images with sharp details and respectable dynamic range, producing shots that are more than serviceable for everyday use.

Low-light photography, however, tells a different story. Images taken at night tend to lose clarity and detail, with softer results becoming more noticeable in dim environments.

There's also the rather puzzling omission of an ultrawide lens, especially considering the phone's strong emphasis on its selfie mirror feature. An ultrawide camera would have complemented the device well, particularly for group shots and wider compositions.

Speaking of selfies, the realme 16 5G's 50MP front camera delivers sharp and social-ready portraits, giving it an edge over many mid-range phones that still don't offer this level of resolution.

BATTERY:

No doubt, the standout feature of the realme 16 5G is its massive 7000mAh battery. In PCMark's battery benchmark test, it delivered an impressive endurance of 28 hours and 25 minutes. In real-world use, the device comfortably lasted up to two days on a single-charge with moderate usage.

When it's time to recharge, the realme 16 5G gets back to 100% in just 1 hour and 13 minutes, thanks to 60W SUPERVOOC fast charging support.

CONCLUSION:

The selfie mirror camera may be the nostalgia hook, but the realme 16 5G proves it's more than just a throwback. It stands out as a dependable daily driver, backed by exceptional battery life and a design that confidently holds its own.

For everyday users who value reliability, personality, and all-day power in one package, especially those already within the realme ecosystem, the realme 16 5G delivers exactly what it promises.

That said, if you're not tied to the realme ecosystem, its P25,999 price point may prompt you to explore other options that offer stronger overall value in the same segment.
