TECNO MEGAPAD 2 Review; Not Just your Secondary Screen

Almost everyone needs a smartphone, while a tablet is something you have to be convinced to buy. That distinction matters in a crowded category where many tablets still boil down to one obvious advantage over a similarly priced phone: a bigger screen.

But a tablet has to offer more than extra real estate, and that's where the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 makes a case for itself. For starters, it comes with a free Bluetooth keyboard, a notable inclusion at a time when brands are increasingly scaling back what comes in the box, even leaving out basics like chargers. And that's just the beginning. Read on to see what else MEGAPAD 2 brings to the table.

DISPLAY:

For budget tablets, one of the most common compromises is display quality. Which, when you think about it, is ironic for a device whose biggest selling point is having a bigger screen. That's not the case with the TECNO MEGAPAD 2, which packs an 11-inch 2.5K display that delivers a sharp, vibrant viewing experience.

If you're looking for a secondary screen to play your favorite shows while working on your main display without spending a fortune, the MEGAPAD 2 makes a compelling choice. Just be warned: its display is good enough that your "background" binge-watch might end up becoming the main event.

Its other display-related features add even more value, including a quad-speaker setup, which is still uncommon in affordable tablets, and a 90Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and animations. Based on our actual usage, however, its 550-nit brightness is a weak point, as the screen can be difficult to view comfortably outdoors, especially under direct sunlight.

DESIGN:

The TECNO MEGAPAD 2 takes a more youthful approach to tablet design, with refreshing color options that should appeal to students and younger users looking for something portable, capable, and a little more eye-catching. Adding even more character is its unconventional triangular camera module, which gives the tablet a distinct look in a sea of otherwise familiar designs. Our unit came in Light Green, while Cosmic Orange and Space Gray are also available.

One thing we particularly like about the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 is its slim and lightweight build. At just 547 grams and 6.6mm thin, it's easy to carry around, making it well-suited for students and users who are often on the go. Its all-metal body also gives it a premium look and feel, although the finish is unfortunately prone to picking up fingerprints and smudges.

The buttons are tactile and responsive, with all of them neatly placed along the right side when the tablet is held in portrait orientation. The layout also makes sense in laptop mode with the Bluetooth keyboard, as the controls remain conveniently accessible along the top edge.

There's also an orange One-Tap button that can be customized to trigger different functions, from launching Ella AI and the camera to starting screen or sound recording, enabling Do Not Disturb, toggling mute, and more. It's a small but useful touch that adds a bit of convenience to everyday use.

As we mentioned earlier, one of the TECNO MEGAPAD 2's biggest highlights is its free Bluetooth keyboard. For budget-conscious parents and students, it's a welcome inclusion that eliminates the need for an additional purchase. And it's not just a throw-in accessory. The keyboard comes with a sturdy tablet cover, while its keys feel tactile and solid during use. A magnetic support also keeps the tablet securely in place in laptop mode. Pairing is straightforward: simply switch it on using the power button beside the USB-C charging port, and you're good to go.

The TECNO MEGAPAD 2 doesn't look like a budget tablet and that's one of its strengths. Its premium design and solid build give it a more upscale feel than its price tag suggests.

PERFORMANCE:

At this point, you might be wondering: what's the catch? With the TECNO MEGAPAD 2, the compromise lies in its chipset. It runs on the MediaTek Helio G99, which handles everyday tasks well but starts to show its limitations under heavier workloads, particularly demanding games and video editing.

For typical student tasks like researching online, editing presentations, reading e-books, and binge-watching content, the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 handles things with ease. It may not be built for demanding workloads, but for everyday schoolwork and entertainment, the Helio G99 delivers more than enough performance.

There are also some interesting learning apps pre-installed on the tablet, namely Hi Tutor and LearnUp. The latter serves as a one-stop learning hub with a kid-friendly interface, offering free educational resources, app recommendations, games, and more. It's a useful addition for parents who want to introduce their kids to screen time while giving them a more controlled environment to explore, learn, and play without the worry of stumbling upon inappropriate content.

All of these features come together in a smooth and polished OS experience. TECNO MEGAPAD 2's HiOS 16 is impressive, with fluid animations, seamless app transitions, and an overall experience that feels intuitive and pleasant to use.

In terms of storage, you get 256GB built in, plus microSD support for up to 2TB more – a welcome throwback at a time when expandable storage has all but disappeared from smartphones and tablets. RAM sits at 8GB, with another borrowable 8GB from storage when you're juggling multiple apps.

CAMERA:

Nobody's buying a tablet to shoot their next photo dump. What actually matters is whether the front camera can carry you through a work meeting or an online class without making you look like a security-cam still. The MEGAPAD 2 does the job, with an 8-megapixel front camera that's more generous than the 2MP and 5MP shooters that still show up on tablets in this price range.

BATTERY:

An 8,000mAh battery keeps the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 going for a day or two with moderate use. In our experience, a single full charge was enough to power continuous YouTube vlogs and Netflix playback while working from 8 AM to 10 PM, with the volume set to 60% and adaptive brightness enabled. After 14 hours of use, the tablet still had 47% battery remaining.

Charging, however, takes some patience. It took us almost three hours to go from 0% to 100%. Here's our charging log:

  • 15 minutes — 0-11%
  • 30 minutes — 21%
  • 45 minutes — 31%
  • 1 hour — 40%
  • 1 hour 15 minutes — 50%
  • 1 hour 30 minutes — 60%
  • 1 hour 45 minutes — 75%
  • 2 hours — 84%
  • 2 hours 15 minutes — 92%
  • 2 hours 30 minutes — 98%
  • 2 hours 56 minutes — 100%

CONCLUSION:

What the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 gets right is knowing what a tablet is actually meant to do. Its big, sharp display, smooth software experience, useful AI and learning features, and excellent battery life make it more than just a secondary screen for your smartphone. The bundled Bluetooth keyboard takes things a step further, giving students and budget-conscious users a more practical setup for schoolwork, productivity, and even light content creation.

Of course, it's not without compromises. The MediaTek Helio G99 isn't built for demanding games or heavier workloads, while the cameras are best kept for video calls and basic documentation. Charging also takes some patience. But these are reasonable trade-offs for a tablet that otherwise delivers a well-rounded everyday experience.

At P16,999, the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 makes a compelling case for itself, especially with the free Bluetooth keyboard included. Take a closer look at the TECNO MEGAPAD 2 and discover its features in action through our reels on the TeknoGadyet Facebook page.
