Service revenues of its individual wireless business – which includes the consumer sales of its Smart, Sun, and TNT mobile brands – rose 18% year-on-year to Php16.9 billion, net of interconnection costs. The increase in revenues was driven by the growing data and broadband revenues, which accounted for 65% of the total.

Moreover, the wireless brands also recorded 3.4 million new customers in Q1 2019. About two-thirds of these consumers are smartphone owners, of whom about 70% are data users. Mobile data traffic surged by 127% year-on-year to 204 petabytes, as well.

PLDT even announced that their customers are watching more and more videos on their smartphones. With the introduction of the Video Every Day data packages in 2018, more subscribers have been accessing various video services like YouTube, NBA, iWant, and iFlix.

Mobile gaming has contributed to the on-going increase in data usage, following PLDT and Smart’s initiatives to establish their official professional eSports team, “Omega.”
