INTRODUCTION:

In June, OPPO brought its latest flagship smartphone – the Reno 10x Zoom – to the Philippines. Packed with sophisticated design and powerful overall specs, the device proved that the Chinese mobile maker is now ready to produce premium handsets that can go head to head against other tech giants.

For our team, the Reno 10x Zoom marked a new beginning for OPPO, as it made a strong statement that the brand is no longer about just “selfie” smartphones. In fact, the device left us with good impressions after months of using it as our main driver.

However, as it comes with a costly price tag, let’s find out if it’s more deserving than other flagship smartphones.

PHYSICAL:

The Reno 10X Zoom is not as flashy as other smartphones in the market – and this exact reason makes it more competitive and total head-turner than other handsets with an aggressive design. Away from this year’s trend, the device flaunts a simpler, premium-looking body that we prefer the most.

Its back cover gives off a classy appearance, which can surely steal your attention. It also has no protruding cameras. To protect its sensors against scratches, OPPO mounted it with a tiny ceramic dot called O-Dot.

What makes it more unique is its shark fin-like pop-up camera. This accommodates its front facing shooter and flash. Meanwhile, its back portion also comes with a flash, which might be better if it is placed along with its rear sensors instead.

DISPLAY:

The Reno 10X Zoom is dominated by a large 6.6-inch AMOLED screen with an FHD+ display, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. As it sports a real all-screen display, our team enjoyed watching videos and playing games using the device. Its good viewing angle and brightness level give an an additional fun to our entertainment experience, too.

During our tests, we noticed that it has accurate colors and sharp details. We can also navigate it without any issue when used under direct sunlight.

SOFTWARE:

Out of the box, OPPO loaded the Reno 10x Zoom with Android 9.0 Pie operating system with ColorOS 6 skin on top. Similar to other OPPO smartphones, the device features lively icons with a large size. It boasts multiple home screens, too, as it lacks an app launcher. So, if you wish to organize your apps, you have to create app folders to avoid spending too much time navigating it.

Meanwhile, OPPO offers various gesture options in its settings to customize user’s experience.

What impressed us the most, on the other hand, is its fast face unlock technology, as it works flawlessly even in low-light settings. However, we’re too afraid to wear out its pop-up camera, so we just opted to use its in-display fingerprint scanner when unlocking the device. Good thing, it's pretty responsive too.

PERFORMANCE:

OPPO equipped the Reno 10x Zoom with a flagship Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor and Adreno 640 graphics. In the Philippines, it is being offered with a large 8GB of RAM and a significant 256GB storage. Knowing that it would deliver a superior performance with this configuration, we still ran it on our preferred benchmark apps to see its limits.

Here are the results:

Benchmark Scores

  • AnTuTu - 363,834
  • Geekbench - 3,107 (Single Core)
  • Geekbench - 11,004 (Multi Core)
  • PCMark Work 2.0 - 8,672
  • 3DMark - 59, 923 (Ice Storm Unlimited)
  • 3DMark - 7,753 (Sling Shot)

As our main driver, the Reno 10x Zoom never disappointed us all throughout our experience. When we’re heavily using it, the device never lagged even if we’re switching from one app to another. It didn’t freeze, as well, even when multiple apps were running on the background.

Moreover, we’re glad that it didn’t heat up during continuous usage. The device can also upgrade your gaming experience, as it can run games with heavy graphics without any issue.

CAMERA:

As expected, the Reno 10x Zoom is banked with great photography department. The device is armed with triple-rear camera setup comprising of a 48-megapixel f/1.8 main shooter, 8-megapixel f/2.4 ultrawide lens, and an impressive 13-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto sensor that can go up to 10x hybrid zoom, and up to 60x digital zoom.

For selfies, it is geared with a 16-megapixel f/2.0 selfie snapper that supports AI capabilities to enhance your photos.

If you’re looking for a camera smartphone, then, the Reno 10x Zoom might be one of the best handsets for you. The device can produce great images with vivid colors, good dynamic range, and plenty of details. We also noticed that it can take more natural looking images compared to other OPPO handsets.

Another impressive feature is its Night mode. When enabled, users can surely capture great images in low-light settings. Although it isn't the best in its segment, we could say that its performance is more than enough to deserve two thumbs up.

For portrait, it would satisfy your experience with its rear and selfie cameras through its professional-looking or studio-like photos. Also, its bokeh effect works fine, as it has good subject detection.

Meanwhile, what seems to be its main selling point is its telephoto sensor. With its periscope capability, users can surely capture images beyond their expected range. However, we must be honest that images turned too soft with visible noises when pushed up to 60x digital zoom.

CONNECTIVITY:

The Reno 10x Zoom is a dual-SIM device that supports basic connectivity features such as Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and LTE. All of these worked well, considering that we have good signal reception too. Its GPS also has an accurate performance when using Google Maps and Waze.

Other notable connectivity features include NFC, 3.5mm audio jack, and USB Type-C.

BATTERY:

OPPO juiced it with a large 4,065mAh battery capacity. As our main driver, its power can last for almost two days, which means we’re only charging the phone once a day. It has good battery consumption, too, even when we’re continuously using it.

Meanwhile, its PC Mark Battery Life Test score suggested that it would last for only 15 hours and 27 minutes.

The device supports 20W VOOC flash charge, allowing us to fully charge its battery in just an hour and a half.

VERDICT:

Overall, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom gave us all the things we expect to receive from a flagship smartphone. If you have enough bucks to spend, the device can surely satisfy your mobile needs – thanks to its great photography capabilities, good display, and long battery life.

However, if you don’t really need tricky camera features, then, consider getting other flagship smartphones with a lower asking price.

You can get the Reno 10x Zoom in the Philippines for Php45,990.
