Nokia as a tech brand has built a legacy so strong that even as technology advances, it won't lose its charm to its niche customers. It might be a late-comer in the Android smartphone battle, but it made a loud entrance. Over the years, it has continued to expand its portfolio of smartphones to cater to a wide range of users. Among the latest of its offerings is the Nokia G10, priced under Php7,000. So what makes this smartphone unique and worthy to purchase? Find out in this review.

PHYSICAL and DISPLAY:

As expected from an entry-level smartphone, the Nokia G10 is primarily built with plastic material. The device's textured rear cover, though, makes it immune from fingerprints and smudges. The Nokia G10 is also protected from accidental water splashes, so that's a plus point regarding its design. It also has pretty color variants that are Nordic-inspired -- blue and purple.

Upfront, the Nokia G10 flaunts a 6.52-inch IPS display in 720 x 1600 resolution in a 20:9 screen ratio. It has the dated waterdrop notch to house its front camera, and its bezels aren't that thin, especially on the chin with the Nokia branding. Despite this, the smartphone's screen is enough for the Nokia G10 to be a decent binge-watch buddy. Its display quality isn't that superb, but it's also not boring. The Nokia G10 has just the right display color saturation and detail sharpness fitting to its price point.

Even though the Nokia G10 is a budget device, it comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and a USB Type-C port commonly found on smartphones under the mid-range segment and up. Besides unlocking the phone instantly via the fingerprint sensor, the Nokia G10 also has a facial recognition function. It also has a dedicated microSD slot, so you don't need to sacrifice going dual SIM to expand the device's storage.

SOFTWARE and PERFORMANCE:

Perhaps one of the things that one should appreciate about the Nokia G10 is its clean interface. With this smartphone operating on the latest Android 11 version, its stock UI is neat, straightforward, and free from bloatware. Furthermore, according to HMD Global, the Nokia G10 is also assured of a 2-year Android update for security and improved performance.

This smartphone also offers the necessary sensors like an accelerometer (G-sensor), ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and a dedicated Google Assistant button.

Its storage and memory might not be the selling points for the Nokia G10, but then again, remember that this is an entry-level device. Its 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage expandable up to 512GB are enough to handle light-to-moderately demanding apps without glitches.

However, using this device for multitasking might bring you hiccups along the way. In our experience, switching between apps for streaming, gaming, and social media gave us a few crashes. This is quite understandable, especially with the MediaTek Helio G25 Octa-core chipset that the Nokia G10 carries. A good thing about the Nokia G10, though, is that it keeps its cool and doesn't overheat.

Here's a look at its benchmark results:
  • Antutu - 116,790
  • Geekbench Single-Core - 144
  • Geekbench Multi-Core - 834
  • PC Mark Work Performance 3.0 - 5,308
  • PC Mark Work Storage 2.0 - 5.059
  • 3D Mark Sling Shot - 826
  • 3D Mark Sling Shot Extreme - 478

CAMERA:

The Nokia G10 joins the roster of budget-friendly smartphones that come with a triple rear camera setup. On paper, this smartphone has a 13-megapixel primary camera, 2-megapixel depth sensor, and 2-megapixel macro lens. There's also a rear flash LED.

Allow us to be blunt: if you're looking for a budget phone with good cameras, you might want to look elsewhere. The three cameras of the Nokia G10 produce mediocre images with clouded sharpness and clarity even when taken under well-lit environments. It also doesn't have a built-in optical zoom, and its digital zoom is limited at 4x. Selfies taken by the Nokia G10's 8-megapixel front camera aren't that good, either. They look dull, and they always look like they're shot with shaky hands.

These shortcomings in terms of imaging are very noticeable, especially since there are smartphone options under the same price segment capable of delivering decent photos, at least during day photography.

Here are some sample photos captured using the Nokia G10.

BATTERY:

What the Nokia G10 lacked in terms of camera performance, it more than made up with its battery life. This smartphone can last up to three days on a single charge with 5,000 mAh juice under light to moderate usage. Again, we'd like to emphasize that this device supports USB Type-C charging, meaning the Nokia G10 is way better than budget devices that can't let go of the aging micro-USB port. Its 10W USB-C charging support paves for around three hours of charging.

FINAL WORDS:

The Nokia G10 might not be a mind-blowing budget smartphone, but it has its enticing points. With a decent screen, durable battery life, delicate design, and promised Android upgrades, the Nokia G10 is a good choice for only P6,990. This device is available at the official Nokia store on Shopee.
