Roblox Unveils Roblox Kids and Roblox Select: New Age-Based Accounts and Enhanced Parental Controls
Roblox Corporation has officially announced a significant shift in its platform architecture with the introduction of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. Rolling out in early June 2026, these new account tiers are designed to provide a safer, more age-appropriate environment for users under 16 by automatically aligning content and communication settings with their development stage.

New Account Tiers at a Glance
The update introduces two distinct categories for younger audiences, verified through Roblox’s global age-check technology or parental confirmation:
Roblox Kids (Ages 5–8):
- Curated Content: Access is restricted to games with "Minimal" or "Mild" maturity ratings that have cleared a rigorous three-step selection process.
- Communication: All chat and communication features are disabled by default to ensure maximum safety.
- Visual Identity: The app features a unique background color to clearly identify the account type.
Roblox Select (Ages 9–15):
- Expanded Access: Users can explore games rated up to "Moderate" maturity.
- Communication: Standard communication defaults remain in place for this age bracket.
- Visual Identity: Includes distinct visual treatments within the interface.
Automated Progression and Universal Age-Checks
To streamline the user experience, Roblox will automatically transition accounts as players grow older. A user will move from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age 9, and finally to a standard account upon turning 16. Users who have not completed an age check will face the strictest limitations, restricted to "Minimal" or "Mild" content, with all communication disabled until their age is verified.

A Dynamic Safety Framework for Creators
Roblox is implementing an ongoing evaluation process to ensure games available to minors meet high safety standards. For a game to be included in these younger tiers, developers must meet specific criteria:
- Developer Verification: Creators must be ID-verified, use two-step verification, and hold an active Roblox Plus subscription.
- Real-Time Monitoring: The platform will analyze how older users interact with games and monitor reports to determine suitability for younger audiences.
- Default Exclusions: By default, "Roblox Kids" and "Roblox Select" accounts will exclude social hangouts, free-form drawing games, and experiences featuring sensitive themes.
Furthermore, Roblox plans to integrate the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework later this year to provide globally recognized, region-specific ratings like ESRB and PEGI.
Empowering Parents with Granular Controls
The update also brings robust new tools for parents to customize their child's experience:
- Granular Game Approval: Parents can now manually approve access to specific games that fall outside their child's default account tier.
- Extended Management: The ability to block individual games and manage direct chat settings now extends through age 15.
- Activity Transparency: Parents retain visibility into the games their children play and their digital friend lists.
By evolving from static safety features to an age-adaptive journey, Roblox aims to remove the guesswork for families while maintaining an immersive, creative environment for its global community.
