OPPO Pad Air Review; The Right Mix of Everything

INTRODUCTION:

Tablets are once again winning the hearts of tech consumers. Before, these devices used to be supplementary until the hybrid work setup requiring a portable and powerful gadget for convenience became prominent.

This could be the reason why more tech brands are expanding their offerings to include tablets like OPPO, which launched the OPPO Pad Air – the first tablet it released to the Philippine market. If you're looking for a massive and immersive tablet that carries an Android operating system, the OPPO Pad Air is definitely a good choice. Read our review and find out why.

DESIGN and BUILD:

While most tablets in the local market tend to adopt a clean slate for the rear, the OPPO Pad Air took the road less traveled by accompanying a sophisticated aesthetic detail. On the back part of this tablet is a textured design which OPPO said was inspired by the beauty of dunes at sunset. Meanwhile, the bigger part of the rear cover is made with OPPO's signature Glow industrial surface that's anti-fingerprint. The corners of the OPPO Pad Air are also rounded, giving that seamless, unibody look.

Other details that can be found on the back of the OPPO Pad Air are its protruded primary camera and the familiar OPPO branding located in the middle.

Another key selling point of the OPPO Pad Air is its slim and lightweight form. At only 440 grams and with a 6.94mm body, you can easily bring this device anywhere you go. Despite its light body, the OPPO Pad Air feels sturdy in the hands.

For ports, the OPPO Pad Air has dual stereo speakers and a power button at the top in portrait mode, while its volume buttons and dual microphones are situated on its right cheek. At the bottom are another set of double stereo speakers and a USB-C port that supports reverse charging.

The OPPO Pad Air is available in purple and grey. The retail package contains mainly the essentials - the unit, charger, USB cable, ejector pin, and documents. There is no case in the box, and the unit also has no screen protector of any kind.

DISPLAY:

At the front, the OPPO Pad Air flaunts a 10.36-inch display in 2K resolution (2000 x 1200 pixels). Other technical screen details include 8mm bezels, 83.5 percent screen-to-body ratio, 1 billion colors, and 2048 levels of adaptive brightness.

Based on our actual experience, the OPPO Pad Air shines in the screen department. Its display gives off vivid colors and sharp details, making tasks like binge-watching and even just idly-scrolling an enjoyable experience. This tablet's 10.36-inch screen is just enough to multitask, take notes, read e-Books, edit photos and videos, and play games.

Plus, OPPO added an eye comfort feature on the OPPO Pad Air, ensuring that users' eyes are protected against harmful blue light even with prolonged use.

Perhaps one thing we want OPPO to improve on is the brightness levels of the Pad Air when used outdoors. Also, it would have been like a cherry on top of this tablet had a high refresh rate, say 90Hz or 120Hz, for a more fluid screen experience. But these are just supplementary features for some.

It's also worth mentioning that the OPPO Pad Air has Dolby Atmos speakers for an even more engaging experience.

PERFORMANCE:

Powered by a Snapdragon 680 4G (6nm) with an octa-core processor complemented by a combination of 4GB RAM + 4GB virtual RAM and 64GB or 128GB onboard storage, the OPPO Pad Air can effortlessly give its users a no-hiccup experience. Switching between multiple apps running simultaneously in the background is a breeze. Even when used for gaming at mid-levels for graphics, effects, and sounds, the OPPO Pad Air gives an excellent performance. Take note, though, that even though it employs a 4G chipset, there is NO mobile connectivity of any kind as there is no SIM slot.

If you plan to use the OPPO Pad Air to store more photos, videos, and other documents, fret not, as its internal storage can be expanded to up to 512GB via microSD support. We have the 128GB variant for this review, and there are about 24GB used by the system, leaving about 104GB to the users.

Initially, it comes with ColorOS 12.1 on Android 12, but immediately after connecting to the internet, the ColorOS 13.0 based on Android 13 will be available for download. What adds convenience to the overall experience using the OPPO Pad Air are the features incorporated with its UI. You'll get features like Split Screen, floating windows, and more. These will make you maximize the large display of the OPPO Pad Air more.

CAMERA:

Tablets are less camera-centric than smartphones, so we expected a mediocre performance from the OPPO Pad Air for this department. However, the photos we took using its 8-megapixel, f/2.0 rear camera were pretty decent. The OPPO Pad Air's pictures were already good enough to be posted on social media without edits.

For selfies, you can use the OPPO Pad Air's 5-megapixel front camera. While self-portraits taken using this tablet weren't as good as those taken using smartphones, we're impressed that its camera performs well when used for video calls.

Shooting modes for the OPPO Pad Air include video, photo, portrait, time-lapse, and text scanners for both cameras. If you want to use the panorama mode, remember to hold the OPPO Pad Air in portrait mode, otherwise, it won't work.

The rear camera of the OPPO Pad Air supports 1080p and 720p at 30fps, sans an image stabilization feature. Meanwhile, the front camera shoots 1080p at 30fps by default, but you can also tweak it to 720p.

BATTERY:

If you're a semi-power user who doesn't want to recharge a device every now and then, the OPPO Pad Air is your match. We used it for binge-watching, gaming, scrolling, web browsing, and music listening for almost the entire day, and its battery still lasted for up to three days on a single charge. This device also supports 18W fast charging, which will have you wait for a couple of hours and a half before reaching a 100% battery level again.

Moreover, the OPPO Paid Air supports 5W reverse charging, which you can use to refuel your other devices via its USB-C port.
